The Animals Of Farthing Wood
The Animals Of Farthing Wood: The Story Continues.... | Colin Dann
8 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
After their legendary journey out of danger and into the safe haven of White Deer Park, the animals of Farthing Wood look forward to getting used to their new life in the nature reserve. But winter is drawing in: the nights are colder and food for the animals is scarce. Other animals in the park are unfriendly and want to make trouble, and around the Park there are the perils of hunters' traps, as well as humans and their machines. Will life ever return to normal for the animals of Farthing Wood...?

I read the whole series finally, the writing is fairly simple and so were the plots. But characters, their interactions and the humour made up for it. It also had some rather gruesome and sad deaths for children‘s series. My favourite book was “The Fox Cub Bold” because it had a more serious plot. I also found that final book ended the series really satisfyingly. If you like animal fantasy books, then you should check out this series.

Definitely a book that makes you think ❤️ 🌍

“I must confess, I shall never understand humans,‘ Fox said, shaking his head. In the wild certain animals pray on others who ,in turn, pray on smaller ones.Every creature knows what is his enemy, and also what he has no reason to fear. But those humans, who a short while ago were clamouring for our deaths, will probably go home and play with their dogs and talk to their horses with real effection.‘

Bits Gotta love that cognitive dissonance...😑 3y

Such a wonderful read, a must for all animal lovers and definitely not just for children. I wasn‘t expecting to love this so much, Not just all warm fuzzy feelings though , there are many serious topics bought up in the book. Fox hunting , littering , fires started from a single cigarette , the effects of poisonous pesticides, the importance of conservation and all from different animals perspectives. Really quite a powerful book! 🐰 🦊 🦡 🐍

Powered_By_Plants Loved the little interview at the end with Colin Dann , he wrote this in 1979 when the concerns weren‘t as dire as they are now , it‘s really vital we all start taking action now to preserve some of the species that are losing their homes. The HS2 springs to mind!! 🚆 Another square on my board 🥰 #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks 3y

Yuki_Onna I looooooooooved that book as a child!! And the TV series, too!! They made me cry so often... It taught me I was right to love and value animals as much as I did and still do. ❤ 3y
Powered_By_Plants @Yuki_Onna oh my goodness me too! I remember the tv show making me cry and now I know why. There are some really harrowing chapters of human and animal cruelty . Such a Gorgeous book though , so pleased I got around to reading it 🥰 3y

Finally started reading the original Animals of farthing wood, brings back childhood memories and wow it really pulls on your heart strings 🦊 🦡 🦉 🐍

Had me immediately thinking of all the over developing & huge new housing estates going up around our area.

One of the first chapters is toads story,he goes into detail of how he was captured in a jam jar in the blistering heat by one of the school children and taken far away from his home 🐸😢

This little one came through the post this morning . I thought I had purchased the novel but it turned out to be a cute short story .
It bought back such fond memories we managed to find the tv series on YouTube.
Mean mummy though only allowed to watch the first one until we read the full book.

My favourite childhood book is The Animals of Farthing Wood by Colin Dann. It was the first book I ever bought for myself (a month's worth of pocket money - totally worth it) and now I'm reading it with my daughters. I bought them their own copy for a proper read-along during the summer holidays.
