In 1970, Sara Ehrenreich boards a small plane and returns to New York City with much fanfare; she will be featured in Life magazine. She has not left Ta'un'uuthe South Seas island upon which she and her husband, Philip, were marooned during a stormin more than thirty years. Sara doesnt know that man has landed on the moon. She has never seen a ballpoint pen. Her body is covered, head to toe, in tattoos. Flashback: its 1918 and Sara, a shop girl and aspiring artist, meets Philip, a wealthy member of the avant-garde elite. The two fall in love, marry, and collaborate to make art, surrounded by socialites and revolutionariesuntil the Depression cripples not just Sara and Philip, but most of their patrons. When Philip is offered a job gathering masks from the South Seas, they jump at a chance to escape Americas sorrows, traveling to Taunuu for what they think will be a weeks stay. The rest is historya history Sara records on her skin through the traditional tattoos that become her masterpiece and provide an accounting of her days. Narrated in vivid and starkly moving prose, The Tattoo Artist reminds us of the unforeseeable forces that shape each human life. From the Trade Paperback edition.

This looks really interesting. But also check out The Blue Tattoo for a non-fiction account of someone living in a white society with a tattoo on her face. It takes place in the 1800's before tattoos were considered acceptable. Olive Oatman was her name, though I consider the story quite sad.

This was a big disappointment for me. I expected the majority of the story to take place after her 30 years on the island back in New York. It was mostly on the island and mostly about tattoos from the indigenous people‘s point of view in the island on the Pacific. Terrible cop out ending. Didn‘t really care about the characters.

My entry for my favorite “under the radar” read! This slim novel follows a woman stranded on an island inhabited by “savages” who finds herself more at home there than her privileged upbringing in the States. #24in48

Finished this one last night. I was pleasantly surprised by the story. The cover was a bit of a turnoff, but the story of how the narrator became covered in tattoos was horrifying and intriguing.

Day 14 #AugustGrrrl I was introduced to this novel earlier this summer by @DivineDiana 😍A woman arrives back in NYC in the early 1970's completely covered in #Tattoo (s). She had been living off the grid entirely (since the 1930's) in the South Seas when she & her husband were marooned during a storm. This book sounds fascinating as each #tattoo is a clue to what she endured on the island 🌴 Excited to see some beautiful ink today 💘😊🙌🏻

DivineDiana Fascinating story! Now, what else can I come up with?!? 😉🤔 7y
Cinfhen I'm sorry @DivineDiana I totally "stole" your book ?I have confidence in your ability to produce another title ? 7y

This is a recent read. The main character Sarah Ehrenreich was an incredibly strong, brave woman. An artist who due to unforeseen tragedies finds herself living on an island in the South Seas for over thirty years with a primitive tribe. #augustgrrl #independentwomen

Cinfhen This sounds great! Stacked!!! 7y
DivineDiana @Cinfhen Quick read. I look at tattoos differently as a result of this book and Moana! 😉 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I really want to read this one. I have three tattoos and could have more. 7y

I finished this book today. Fascinating tale of a young bohemian couple from New York who travel to an island in the South Seas, looking for art. They discover a tribe whose art is created on their bodies. Intricate, and mesmerizing, the tattoos relate each person's life story.
