Balford-Le-Nez is a dying seatown on the coast of Essex. When a member of its small Asian community is found dead, Sergeant Barbara Havers finds she must probe not only the mind of a murderer and a case very close to her own heart, but the price people pay for deceiving others and themselves.

Deception on His Mind | Elizabeth George

Particularly considering how long ago this was written, 1997, really good job on race relations, confusions, and misunderstandings.

I really enjoy an Elizabeth George mystery, that said this one was a bit of a slow build for me. Ultimately though I enjoyed the journey and look forward to reading the next book in this series. Perhaps Barbara will find some love...

I love this series! Most of the books in the series are over 600 pages; daunting at first, but the payout is so worth it. The way George crafts her characters, their motives and the interweaving personal plots, is so expert. In this book, she touches on the sensitive topic of prejudice against the Pakistani community in Essex. So well written. So far so good, as I‘ve been reading one per month. I plan to get through the series soon. 🚨🚨🚨🚨

Cathythoughts A great review! Makes me want to investigate this author further. 👍🏻 & gorgeous pic of you ✨✨✨ 6y
Tamra What is the first in the series or are they stand alone and don‘t need to be read in order? 6y
EvieBee @Tamra The first is A Great Deliverance, and they should be read in order so you can get the full benefit of the working relationships. Then you can watch the BBC miniseries! So excited for you! 6y
Tamra @EvieBee thank you! 6y

Good morning! Having cold pizza and tea for breakfast. That grosses most people out, but I have this thing about not reheating leftover pizza. Is that weird?!?

#bookandbreakfast #bookandtea

catebutler I‘m the same way, I prefer pizza cold once it‘s leftover. 6y
DGRachel Not weird at all. I like cold leftover pizza, can‘t stand to eat it reheated. 😊 6y
britt_brooke Not weird! (And I love the DD mug). 6y

batsy I prefer leftover pizza cold, too! Unless I have the patience to reheat in the oven :) Not the microwave ❌ 6y
KirstieE Leftover pizza is ALWAYS the best cold 😍 and don't worry, I have it for breakfast too 💁🏻 6y
EvieBee @batsy Yeah, I use the oven as pan storage also...so always have to weigh if it‘s worth pulling it all out. 🤓🤗 6y

Just started book 9 in the Inspector Lynley series tonight, and love when there are maps! Already in the preface, a body is discovered here.

#mapsoflitsy #CurrentlyReading

EvieBee @DivaDiane I made it a goal to read a book from the series every month for this year. I can‘t remember who recommended immersing yourself in a series completely...but it seemed like a good idea! I‘ve been reading this series since I was 18! I‘m 33ish now. But so far I‘ve been enjoying this project. This is the second one for the year. 6y
EvieBee @Melissa_J I‘m so glad! Are you all caught up? When I saw she has book 20 coming out, I was so shocked. I thought it had ended already! 6y
EvieBee @MamaGina It‘s so good! I feel like thus far nothing has topped the very first one. I love literary mysteries! 6y
Melissa_J I‘ve read the first 12. I didn‘t realize how many more books there are now. 6y
EvieBee @Melissa_J Oh yeah! You‘re more than halfway there. 🤓 6y

I am usually pretty fond of the Inspector Lynley mysteries, but the author's depiction of the Pakistani family strikes me as very problematic and stereotypical. Although she also includes a main character and (I think) romantic interest who is Pakistani and more well-rounded, the descriptions are uncomfortable.
