Pretty satisfying! I associate Parker with Sue Grafton and Ed McBain - authors I read lots of when I was working my way through the mystery section as a teen in the late 80s/early 90s, but haven't read much of since. This is the first Spenser novel and I loved the hard-boiled, wry narration. It's definitely of it's time, but progressive for it in some ways, too. I might just read some more of the series (and maybe Kinsey & the 87th precinct, too).

KathyWheeler When I‘ve been in reading slumps, the Spenser books were my go-to to help get me out of those. The fast-paced action combined with short chapters and characters I liked always worked. 3y

quietjenn @LeahBergen yes, there so fun! Although, for the titular object, it wasn't super prominent, except to get Spenser involved with these characters. 3y

1. I finished the tagged book for an upcoming book club meeting. It‘s…fine. Susan Silverman is very obviously not in the picture yet! 😈
2. I don‘t know if this is really a campfire song, but my best friend in Girl Scouts taught me a song called Jeep. It‘s sung very fast, and the lyrics make no sense!

There was no #date, no signature. It was written in a distinctive cursive script. For crissake! A clue. A goddamned clue. I folded the note up and put it in my inside coat pocket. So far I was guilty of breaking and entering, possession of burglar‘s tools, and destruction of property. #QuotsyDec19

My friends mom was getting rid of books - I snagged the bulk of Robert Parker‘s Spencer series. It‘s been on my TBR forever. I also snagged a majority chunk of John D MacDonald‘s Travis McGee series.
All in all a good book haul!

so-so

I thought this was my first Parker book; but a search of my reading logs shows that I read him in 2004 & 2006, before I kept record of my ratings. No worries. As my sole aim right now is to be entertained, this was fine. I was amused to learn that this series was the basis of the TV series Spenser for Hire. This sent me down a bit of an IMDB rabbit hole yesterday—also entertaining.
