The first book in the Dr. Dee series of Tudor thrillers, about the astrologer royal to Queen Elizabeth I--a brew of compelling storytelling, devious politics, witchcraft, and necromantic artsIt is 1560, and Elizabeth Tudor has been on the throne for a year. Dr John Dee, at 32 already acclaimed throughout Europe, is her astrologer and consultant in the hidden arts--a controversial appointment in these days of superstition and religious strife. Now the mild, bookish Dee has been sent to Glastonbury to find the missing bones of King Arthur, whose legacy was always so important to the Tudor line. With him is hardly the safest companion--his friend and former student, Robert Dudley, a risk-taker, a wild card, and possibly the Queen's secret lover. The famously mystical town is still mourning the gruesome execution of its Abbot, Richard Whiting. But why was the Abbot really killed? What is the secret held by the monks since the Abbey was founded by Joseph of Arimathea, uncle of Christ and guardian of the Holy Grail? The mission takes Dee to the tangled roots of English magic, into unexpected violence, necromantic darkness, the breathless stirring of first love, and the cold heart of a complex plot against Elizabeth.

January 2017 was a slow month. I didn't have as much reading time as I had hoped for, but I started lots of interesting books, bought more new (e)books than I intended, started re-reading some classics on #serialreader and am participating in some challenges (#LitsyAtoZ, #hpchapteraday, #readJanuary).

britt_brooke Looks like it was still a great month! 🙌🏻 8y
Lmstraubie If this is a slow month I can only imagine what a fast month looks like!! 😊 8y
julesG @lmstraubie Yeah, well, what can I say. I can manage to read a book a day - who needs sleep? - but lately my kids took up too much of my time and I actually needed the sleep. *sigh* 8y

Donna_sBookMinute Five books in a month is good. My January total was 5 too. My reading plan is a guide to help me increase my numbers. Challenges met are icing on the cake. 8y
julesG @Donna_sBookMinute You're right. It's just awe-inspiring when I see Littens posting their January statistics of double or triple that number. Then again, I remember: Quality not Quantity! So, enjoying my reading time and the books I read is more important than managing to read a book a day. 😉 8y
Donna_sBookMinute No shade. 🌴🌳 We all read at different speeds and with different goals. Quality over quantity works for me. 👩🏽‍🏫 8y
Lmstraubie Darn kids 😉 and sleep is sooooo overrated 😴 ( but I'm a crank without it!) 8y

Pickpick

This novel had been on my #ebookreader, and hence on my #TBR, for much too long.
It was slow at the start and I was about to give up, when it started to pick up speed.

Annoying were typos, repeated words, grammar slips, some strangely placed sentence stress.

3.5/5 stars

Which one to pick next? #LitsAtoZ

BookishMarginalia So many good choices! 8y
julesG @BookishMarginalia See, that's the problem. ;) Guess I'll just read the next Dr Dee novel and be done with it. 8y

Starting the day in a café, after a doctor's appointment. Could be worse.

And now we're picking up the pace.

Lots of typos, repeated words ("And we then we went ...") and some switching from the past tense use into present tense. So mainly, a good editing could have avoided these.

Sorry, but I tend to notice such things and then they annoy me. Am I the only one.

CouronneDhiver No, those errors always bother me too! 8y

This is very slow going. First I thought it was just the style, now I am no longer so sure it is "just" the style I am having problems with. I think I was hoping for more #action, but it's a #murdermystery set in the early Elizabethan times (Elizabeth I, that is), there won't be any fingerprint analysis or spectroscopy of minute evidence.
Still, now that Dr Dee and I have found the first corpse, I need to read on.

It's a good thing Dr Dee loves books. According to his mother, he either has his nose in the stars or in his books.
