Heresy of Dr Dee
Heresy of Dr Dee | Phil Rickman
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Tudor intrigue, murder, and the dark artsthe second in a stunning and acclaimed historical series starring Dr. John Dee, perfect for fans of C. J. SansomAll talk is of the End-time, and the dead are rising. At the end of the sunless summer of 1560, black rumor shrouds the death of the one woman who stands between Lord Robert Dudley and marriage to the young Queen Elizabeth. Did Dudley's wife, Amy, die from an accidental fall in a deserted house, or was it murder? Even Dr. John Dee, astrologer royal, adviser on the Hidden, and one of Dudley's oldest friends, is uncertain. Then a rash promise to the Queen sends him to his family's old home on the Welsh Border in pursuit of the Wigmore Shewstone, a crystal credited with supernatural properties. With Dee goes Robert Dudley, considered the most hated man in England. They travel with a London judge sent to try a sinister Welsh brigand with a legacy dating back to the Battle of Brynglas. After the battle, many of the English bodies were, according to legend, obscenely mutilated. Now, on the same haunted hill, another dead man has been found, similarly slashed. Devious politics, small-town corruption, twisted religion, and a brooding superstition leave John Dee isolated in the land of his father.

Mehso-so

The story was interesting, reading about Dr See trying to find a "shewstone" in the Welsh borderlands. Add a murder mystery and it should be good. Execution though...

Apart from the slow pace of the story, there were grammar mistakes and several inconsistencies that broke my reading stride.

Was about to pail this several times, but since I've wanted to read it for some time I stuck it out.

2.5 of 5 stars

Donna_sBookMinute I love reading honest reviews. 8y
julesG @Donna_sBookMinute Me too. It's better than people gushing about a book that they might have actually bailed on. 8y

Dr Dee and I are enjoying a quiet moment with some Jazz music playing in the background.
I'm "blaming" @scripturient for this, she keeps posting pictures of her coffee/tea moments. ;)

scripturient 😂😂😂👍🏻👌🏻😊 8y

Argh! I've blurbed about some of the inconsistencies within this book and its prequel already, now I've come across another one.
Death is prophesied to Lord Dudley, to happed within a week. When we return to Dudley's POV, it's supposed to happen within a year. Whaaat?

Why don't editors pick these things up? That's worse than the spelling and grammar mistakes so far.

Eyelit So frustrating! 8y

Wanted to use my waiting time for my annual MRI exam for some reading, but it all went so smoothly, I had barely time to take off my coat.
Now I might get some reading time, since I'm injured (tiny needle prick, but I want to take it like a man, today).

Picture: from internet, "Man flu?"

Jenshootsweddings So true 🙊 8y

night_shift You know, this isn't true for my partner. He just works through it and if it's really bad, which has been twice in over a decade, he sequesters himself for a day and then is over it. Actually, I don't think any of the men I know are like this picture. Where did this stereotype even come from?? 😂 8y

julesG @UnidragonFrag I never knew there were men like that until I went to university and met a lot of "sissys". The men in my family would have to be chained to a bed. My husband, on the other hand, just had a very narrow escape, he had man flu. It was worse than taking care of a sick child - even the children complained about him being ill. ;) 8y
Reviewsbylola Man flu is so true! I dread when I hear my husband say he isn't feeling well. 😂😂 8y
night_shift @julesG one of my best friends I met at university and he's definitely not like that. His fiancee is though! Haha.. I think maybe this is all due to the fact I grew up with an ex-military dad (so him nor my brother were like that) in Texas (where men, typically, are shamed for showing any emotion) so. Only whiners in my life are ladies and actual children. 8y
julesG @UnidragonFrag Since my husband is rarely ill, he's forgiven. If he caught every bug, then things would be different. I'm just now enjoying sitting on the sofa, having my husband bring me tea. It's a nice. I could be "seriously" ill more often. ;) 8y

My #LitsyAtoZ book for "H".

Not yet 10 percent into the book but already an annoying mistake.

Pruzy Maybe he is a monk and a priest? 8y
julesG @Pruzy My guess would be neither. He's a hired scryer. Always referred to as "Brother" but once. Guess it's a mistake the editor did not pick up. 8y
