I think this book would be good to use when teaching poetry to a class. I think it would be good for students to hear a poem about the different types of poems.

This book is broken up into three parts: Got Style, In Your Shoes, and Thank You. Each poem is different. I read the Poem Snapshots by Chris Colderley. The poem describes all that poetry is and can be. The poem is like someone is telling you in real life what a poem is. It feels like someone is talking, and then taking a break to think, sort of like a child would do. It has a slow pace to convey its message.

quote

Hue and cry
“Bronzeville lady
Way past cool
Voice like butter
Melting blues

She sung low
she swung high
Rouse with rhyme
Hue and cry

Womanblack
Smile like moon
Bronzeville lady
Gone too soon“

I would allow older elementary school students to look at this and maybe pick a favorite to share with the class and analyze the deeper meaning together. For the younger students, I could read one a day to them (or more) and we can talk about what makes it a poem rather than just a very short story- or lines of words.

This anthology of poems goes into great detail about the many different kinds of poems. It has examples of all the kinds that are beautifully written. From haikus to basic rhyming poems with fantastic imagery, to contemporary verse poems that have a hidden meaning underneath. I think having a collection like this that you can go back to and reflect on many types of poems is great to get a good feel for them all.

“Here a beautiful red field grows- I'd say the loveliest anyone knows.“

I would use this poem with older elementary students to describe how life can be challenging and sometimes it takes more than just belief to make things happen. You have to be willing to put in the hard work and effort to see the results you're looking for. It would also be a good way to reinforce rhyming, as every two lines rhyme. I could ask students to identify the rhymes and note what they feel, hear, or smell when they read the poem.

The poem “A Field of Roses“ by Chris Colderley discusses how there is an old verse that says that believing in roses it what makes them bloom. However, knowing how challenging life can be, it takes many other things other than belief to make something happen. The author concludes by stating that a rich field of flowers grows within them. Each line rhyme with a different ending: -oom, -oil, -air/-are, and -ows. I can see and smell the roses too!

What a fantastic (Coretta Scott King Award Winning) poetry book for students! This can serve as a great IR or PR assignment. This book is a collection of poems for children to read. It honors and celebrates poets of all backgrounds. What a great way to get your students interested in poetry. I think a great idea for a lesson plan would be to pair students up and have them choose one poem to annotate or write about. We love choice in the classroom!

MFlowers https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5702
This cpalms lesson plan dives into the literal and nonliteral meanings of the text. I think that's a great way to deepen one's understanding and comprehension of a poem. When you split the students off into groups, you're fulfilling UDL principles 7.1 (Optimize individual choice and autonomy) & 8.3 (Foster collaboration and community). You're providing your students with choice, so that
4y
MFlowers they will work on something they truly enjoy. Also, you can meet EL strategy 2 (promote cooperation) & 32 (Use student pairs for team learning, especially for reports, experiments and projects).

April is National Poetry Month !! Another great book by Kwame Alexander. This P/B book highlights African American poets with biographical information as well as 20 poems. This would be a great RA or CR. Teachingbooks.net offers a classroom extension where students can work in pairs to create an original work of art to go with an assigned poem. How awesome would it be to then have a in class gallery walk ! #UCFLAE3414SP20

Tabitha_H The UDL principle I would use to accompany this book would be 2.2, clarify syntax and structure. The ESOL strategy would be #14 simplified speech & make it slower and redundant. 5y
DrSpalding It is national poetry month and this is an excellent anthology. Use poetry often in your future classroom. 5y

It also contains biographical information on the poets. This book is also a Coretta Scott King Award winner. Teaching Strategies: RT, CR

gabbymartin EL: 6. Discuss each poem to enhance comprehension before reading another poem. UDL: 2.3 Study and understand the underlying symbolism in poetry. Website: http://www.theclassroombookshelf.com/2017/04/out-of-wonder/ excellent source containing lesson ideas to branch off the text as well as several websites to further explore the text as well! 5y
Kcompton2912 I just posted about another book of a poem this author has done. The poetry is very moving and great for a poetry study. If you combined this book with his poem “The Undefeated” you could do a AS unit comparing the poems and their content. 5y
DrSpalding Choral reading is an excellent strategy to go along with these poems. This has been on my TBR pile for quite some time. So happy you read this. Kwame is amazing! 5y
