The Jemima Code
The Jemima Code: Two Centuries of African American Cookbooks | Toni Tipton-Martin
4 posts | 2 read | 11 to read
Women of African descent have contributed to Americas food culture for centuries, but their rich and varied involvement is still overshadowed by the demeaning stereotype of an illiterate Aunt Jemima who cooked mostly by natural instinct. To discover the true role of black women in the creation of American, and especially southern, cuisine, Toni Tipton-Martin has spent years amassing one of the worlds largest private collections of cookbooks published by African American authors, looking for evidence of their impact on American food, families, and communities and for ways we might use that knowledge to inspire community wellness of every kind. The Jemima Code presents more than 150 black cookbooks that range from a rare 1827 house servants manual, the first book published by an African American in the trade, to modern classics by authors such as Edna Lewis and Vertamae Grosvenor. The books are arranged chronologically and illustrated with photos of their covers; many also display selected interior pages, including recipes. Tipton-Martin provides notes on the authors and their contributions and the significance of each book, while her chapter introductions summarize the cultural history reflected in the books that follow. These cookbooks offer firsthand evidence that African Americans cooked creative masterpieces from meager provisions, educated young chefs, operated food businesses, and nourished the African American community through the long struggle for human rights. The Jemima Code transforms Americas most maligned kitchen servant into an inspirational and powerful model of culinary wisdom and cultural authority.

LeahBergen @Leftcoastzen We have two really big sales here per year and they were canceled this year because of Covid. 😭😭 I said it was like cancelling my Christmas. 😂 4y
merelybookish @LeahBergen I was just telling one of my kids how much I miss the library sales. 🙁 4y
Leftcoastzen No kidding! There were 2 big rummage sales near me cancelled, 3 small library sales ,cancelled! I understand but , the worst is a charity book sale that has been going on here for 60+ years,is the size of a fairground size exhibition hall, (!!!) is cancelled for next February!😫😭 4y
Leftcoastzen @merelybookish It‘s breaking my heart! I also look for bargains for my friend and mom who can‘t do those sales anymore, and those odd treasures you find! Argh! 4y
vivastory @merelybookish @Leftcoastzen I was literally just a few days ago thinking about how much I miss the library sales 🙁📚🙁📚 4y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory It‘s killing me. Untold treasures found cheap are amazing! You never know what you might find. (edited) 4y
merelybookish @vivastory @Leftcoastzen Funny what we mourn. I have kind of accepted I might never go to a movie theatre again. But missing library sales makes me so sad. 4y
vivastory @merelybookish @leftcoastzen I can handle the movie theatre, because most movies are streaming immediately anyways. But library sales and live performances ... 😭 4y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory no live music !😫 4y
vivastory @Leftcoastzen I was supposed to see Tame Impala & Perfume Genius this summer. I'm just sayin'.... 4y
merelybookish @vivastory Wow those would have been great shows! I am also mourning live music. I was supposed to see Laura Marling and Sturgill Simpson in the spring. 4y
LeahBergen @Leftcoastzen @vivastory @merelybookish Right?? With so many things I was like “well, that‘s inconvenient”. Book sales, author events, and other live shows hit close to home. ☹️ 4y
vivastory @merelybookish That would have been amazing! I have been following Sturgil Simpson for years & Marling's “Held Down“ is one of my fave singles of the year. I should check out her album. Going to add it on spotify 4y
rubyslippersreads Library sales and thrift shops are two things I really, really miss. I ❤️ the thrill of the hunt. 4y

I am so happy right now! How could I resist this James Beard winning cookbook!Toni Tipton-Martin spent years accumulating on of the world‘s largest collection of cookbooks published by African American authors to look for evidence of influence on food & American culture.A beautiful book by a cultural historian ? Yes please! As I deny I collect cookbooks and have approximately 250 .🙄❤️📚

LeahBergen Oh, jeez. Yeah, that‘s me, too (I probably have a couple of hundred as well). 😆 I bought a really cool older one at a sale a couple of years ago that is right in line with this post. Have you ever heard of it? 4y
LeahBergen Oh, it‘s written by the white family whose cook he was for 40 odd years. It‘s quite an interesting little bit of cookery history. 4y
LeahBergen And I may need this book, too. 😆 4y
