Why I still read Bellow.
Am I really up to this? I did really enjoy Guinns Manson book but didn‘t read The Road to Jonestown .Interview with the author on Fresh Air made me do it!
“Archives”was 1 of my favorite reads of the assortment we read for the #NYRBbookclub.Malcom tried to write a regular autobiography, then abandoned it.Here, she uses photographs from her past to generate wonderful autobiographical essays, about her family leaving Europe & becoming New Yorkers, her formative years ,even the lawsuit connected to the Archives book.A wonderful read , I love her attention to detail and the way she saw the world.Brilliant!
Despite the bookmark, this book doesn‘t suck. For some reason, mysteries & thrillers are comfort reads , maybe cuz mostly, the good guys win? Silva consistently delivers, spies, intrigue, art & history in his titles, hoping I get to the next one soon .

I did audio, I drive soooo much. To be a Royal is to be a bird in a gilded cage.Of course everyone that remembers the 2 princes walking behind their mothers coffin feel a heavy sadness.Harry was hounded by the same “paps” that hound the entire family, & sometimes Harry‘s naïve indiscretions were spun out of control.Still between his military service, good works in Africa ,& finding Meghan, he‘s done his best to have an authentic life.
Books you hid from your parents 70s & 80s version!
I didn‘t know ,did you?. March, 7th,2023

#JanuaryJazz #ChineseNewYear Beautiful stamps for the Lunar New Year! Happiness & Joy to all who celebrate !
Really long sort pack day for mom . Hoping some wine with Gabriel will help me wind down.

#WhartonBuddyRead can‘t wait for our discussion. Troy like many young men,was eager to go to war as a soldier or to help in some way. It‘s fair to say it‘s a propaganda piece. To be fair, most young men were drawn to the old myths & stories of heroism, positive change,& even winning the peace. In WWI the dynamic changed.A modern machine war. After, the lost generation would plunge into how horrible it was, so many lost,& how they were forever changed.
Great cultural, design, & social history of the mall .The rush to the suburbs, who it was designed to attract & exclude. The return to the urban, like the Ferry building renewal in San Francisco. The generations of teens that first experienced freedom left at the mall by the parents, the same generation whose first job may have been at the same mall , or they just loved hanging at the food court or the arcade.Highly recommended!

Well go to an Ace Hardware in a senior area and what do you expect!

#serieslove2023 Bosch ditches the PI gig & goes back to LAPD.Chief Irving “welcomes “ him back calling him a retread & saying he‘s watching for the screw up. Bosch has one of the hardest tasks , closing very old cases. The murder of a teen , decades old . I love Bosch , he and the city of L.A.are great characters.Been a long time since I read 2 in a row from a continuing series.
Sad to see he had passed.I have read a couple of his books , but not the tagged one often considered his masterpiece. https://apnews.com/article/russell-banks-dead-cloudsplitter-affliction-sweet-her...

Hemingway was working with the Red Cross as an ambulance driver. He was on a canteen run to bring chocolate & Cigarettes to the soldiers. Got hit by mortar fire. Ended up falling in love with his nurse.Agnes thought he was too young.
When they are a Buck a book at your library, I just couldn‘t leave them there!
😡 At least people have been helping them out by ordering some books.
Why Littens don‘t exactly hate jury duty !😀📚
Actually the first book I finished this year ,a few days ago .Happy to be working on #serieslove2023
The FBI has reason to believe a serial killer , the Poet who eluded them years ago has resurfaced,as Bosch , now doing the PI thing gets a call from a wife of a friend questioning if her husband‘s death was really a health issue or something else ? Where the stories intersect, there are definitely some leads in common.10th Bosch in series.
#JanuaryJazz #soup One of my favorite places ! Miss going there so much. https://www.booksoup.com/
Wine , salad , & Chiefs . Contemplating my next move . Who am I kidding? Go home & read 📚
Bosch & a beer .Happy Friday night !

#12booksof2022 Father & son try to survive in a post apocalyptic world .Such a dark , powerful read . so my 12 days of Christmas Booklist now done , this was the book for December. I was blessed in December, in a sense, a three tie.”Joan is Okay “by Weike Wang & “Mrs.Palfrey at The Claremont “ by Elizabeth Taylor were brilliant!
#12booksof2022 Nov.pick.Seth goes back to LA , he has history there but is sent as a journalist to cover the Martinez brothers (Menendez) trial & a young actor playing a gay role even though he‘s straight. It‘s the mid 90s & Indiana skewers the media, people obsessed w/ criminal trials,NY ,LA, & those that believe their own hype. The edgy 80s gave way to a tired despair in some ways I think. Sarcastic & snarky,as Seth dismantles things in his past.
#doublespin Dec. last bk I finished 22‘.They were seekers of knowledge, not satisfied w/ the button down conformity of the U.S. post WWII.This book was well written & includes women who were important in the group but not often covered. Margaret Randall, Bonnie Bremser, Joanne Kyger.
Chapters on Kerouac,Ginsburg, Ferlinghetti, McClure ,Lamantia.Thing they learned there became part of their causes & work.Great read for Beat fans!Highly recommended
#JanuaryJazz #cuddleupday Just what Tom Tom is best at !Me , book , coffee , back in bed for cuddles!
Late to the party but hoping some #serieslove2023 will help me get my TBR down.I am so often charmed by a book here & there I forget to focus on series that I enjoy.Almost done with The Narrows .
The year of Connelly , Silva , Leon,& Thompson with her New York gaslight mysteries.
#12booksof2022 my September pick.Undine Spragg, the main character of this novel is a relentless social climber,to reach her next goal she cares not who she damages or leaves behind in her wake.Wharton is so good at nuanced & detailed writing, and doesn‘t hesitate to skewer people of her class .I read several of Wharton‘s books this year , some with the group
#WhartonBuddyRead the discussions are a treat!
#lastfirst was excited when I found The Beats in Mexico and it didn‘t disappoint. Review later. I finished it about 11:30 last night! I thought getting back to Bosch in the new year , a comfort crime read though there‘s nothing cozy about Bosch, I am used to him.😁, 10 in the series I think .
My goal was actually 101 this year, my mom had some health issues and of course, I wanted to help her. She is much improved & I was WAY behind on my goal but caught up somewhat. As many Littens might agree, reading keeps us sane.On to 2023!
#12booksof2022 August pick.I love this graphic novel, I think many could learn from it .It filled me with compassion for Maia , and more understanding of how complicated our relationship even to ourselves can be.I‘m a bit saddened it‘s often mired in controversy.
Drama ! Happy New Year‘s Eve! I‘m about 6 hours from midnight right now , maybe I will finish another book, but I know I‘m going to have a cocktail! 🍸
#12Booksof2022 July This book! Just scroll through the reviews.I just couldn‘t stop reading it.I had me in its grasp and I wouldn‘t have found it if the
#persephoneclub didn‘t exist. Thanks to them.I read some good books in July , but this was the best!
The tagged book may/may not be the last book I finish this year. Meanwhile after reading the Ferlinghetti chapter decided I should just do this short side read of The Mexican Night since it‘s in the collection.Pad that Goodreads total with a slim volume!😄📚
#12booksof2022 June pick.Published in 1989 , it quickly became a favorite of many readers .I was an Irving fan , but avoided it.MAYBE IT WAS BECAUSE OWEN SPOKE IN CAPS! Maybe it is because this book talks a lot about faith , which I don‘t really have a good relationship with!😄And while I loved it , it is STILL NOT MY FAVORITE IRVING!😄Another factor, sometimes you want a book you deliberately didn‘t read by a fave in case something happens.🤷♀️
#12Booksof2022 my May pick ! It has stuck with me . Karla meets the undocumented where they live and work &shares their experiences ,often heartbreaking. Tales of exploitation, grief, while trying to create a better life. There is plenty of blame to go around for both major parties infighting or ignoring that our immigration policies are a shambles. And DACA ! Don‘t get me started.
April .leave it to me to pick a novel from 1862 .😂this semi autobiographical novel was where Dostoevsky cut his chops on developing characters & worked on the psychological elements of his novels .So not plot driven.I felt I was there .😱I adore this cover of this old Grove Press Evergreen edition that has lived in my collection for years. #12Booksof2022
Kudos to Charco Press for more books in translation! The author is from #peru though the topic in these short stories is family drama ,dysfunction, in families we choose & those we are born into. Some interesting writing a soft pick.I found this just browsing the new shelf at my library, a simple pleasure indeed .
#12Booksof2022 my pick for best of March.A remarkable autobiography of a woman who would not be stopped when it came to fighting for justice. They burned down her newspaper office, she was threatened constantly, but still continued on.One of the founders of the NAACP.
Am I gonna want my $3.99 back? Clerks III
