Stephen Baxter has been heralded, with some merit, as Arthur C. Clarkes literary heir, and Proxima certainly reinforces this accolade in spades.Concatenation Mankinds future in this galaxy could be all but infinite. There are hundreds of billions of red dwarf stars, lasting trillions of yearsand their planets can be habitable for humans. Such is the world of Proxima Centauri. And its promise could mean the never-ending existence of humanity. But first it must be colonized, and no one wants to be a settler. There is no glamor that accompanies it, nor is there the ease of becoming a citizen of an already-tamed world. There is only hardship...loneliness...emptiness, even as war brews in the solar system. But thats where Yuri comes in. Because sometimes exploration isnt voluntary. It must be coerced.

"She no longer had a human form, not remotely. Now she was a disc spun out of carbon sheets, a hundred metres across and just a hundredth of a millimetre thick. Yet she was fully aware, her consciousness sustained by currents and charge stores in the multi-layered mesh of electrically conductive carbon of which she was composed."

Well, I finished this series and I‘m counting it as a successful completion of the #readingenvysummerreading challenge even though I technically started and completed them all in summer. 👍🏼

Fun fact: I bought Proxima and Obelisk at Waterstones in Glasgow last summer and dragged them back across the pond, and Ultima was the last book I bought at Uncle Hugo‘s Science Fiction Bookstore before it was burned down in the Minneapolis riots.

Baxter is my favorite author of hard sci-fi. His novels are always grand in scope and typically not optimistic or utopian. Oh, humans have advanced technologically but the dark side of humanity always bubbles up in the plots of his novels. The underlying dark tone of this one reminded me a lot of his novels Flood and Ark.

Loved this one and looking forward to reading the sequel, Ultima.

LondElle89 I both love and despise thriftbooks. Love the prices, despise them for making me an avid buyer. Haha. 5y

@Louise my last big holidays... #bookanduke :)

Louise Love it! A silver uke! I have a Bushman Jenny (mahogany) and a bright red one for musicians to sign in silver pen. I‘ll try and post a photo one of these days! Looks like you had some fun in the sun with your #bookanduke! 6y
catsuit_mango @Louise that's my 'travel uke' in plastic to play by/in the water and not worry in the planes. My regular one is a simple wood one that sounds nice. When visiting London we took a long détour for a ukulele shop... Only bought, #, 6y
catsuit_mango A tote bag... I still want/need a better uke but don't play enough for that. Like books you want more of what makes you smile! 6y
Louise @catsuit_mango Apparently, there‘s a big uke scene in London! Ukes are so cute that people have a tendency to accumulate a lot of them. Here in the States, we jokingly refer to it as UAS or Ukulele Acquisition Syndrome. You‘re smart to have a travel uke and a home uke! 6y

Mehso-so

I liked this book, BUT it had some flaws, especially in story-telling and character depth. I know there is at least another book, and I am curious about the development, but the last chapter was absolutely WTF. I didn't need that. Especially because my Latin is still good enough to understand what was being said. Anyone else read this?
