The Thoughts and Happenings of Wilfred Price Purveyor of Superior Funerals
The Thoughts and Happenings of Wilfred Price Purveyor of Superior Funerals | Wendy Jones
5 posts | 13 read | 14 to read
Under the heady influence of a springtime picnic and vague notions of obligation, young undertaker Wilfred Price blurts out a marriage proposal to a woman he barely knows. Much to his consternation, she says yes. As Wilfred attempts to extricate himself from the situation, his betrotheds overbearing father presents further complications. And when Wilfred meets another woman he does wish to marry, a comedy of manners ensues. Set in rural Wales during the 1920s, Wendy Joness charming first novel is a deceptive, subtly humorous entrance to the mores and social conventions of a world gone by.

Mehso-so

Set in 1924, funeral director blurts out a marriage proposal because he is taken by the image of her in a yellow dress. She accepts but he immediately regrets his decision.

The middle of this was a bit slow for me but the ending was strong. Really, this is just not my type of fiction. #24in48

The UK cover of Wilfred Price.

I picked this one up on a whim from the library last year and it was one of my top finds. Its sequel, The World is a Wedding, is even better.

Here's my #booktober entry in the #longtitle category. I've never read a Europa Edition I didn't enjoy! This book is populated by some offbeat, but endearing characters. Now I must read Jones' second book and see how it all turned out...

RealLifeReading Europa Editions always put out very interesting and unusual reads. 8y
thecharmofit Europa always has gorgeous covers! I'm copying you by sharing a long title book, although I have no idea what booktober is. It sounds like a theme thing? 8y
Libby1 This book is wonderful and the second in the series is even better. Also, check out the covers on the UK editions. They're beautiful. 8y

I loved this, especially the title! Slow going at first, then I was taken with hapless Wilfred's attempts to get on with his life. Reading this commits one to the next, The World is a Wedding.
