The Panther and the Lash | Langston Hughes
26 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
I am the American heartbreak The rock on which Freedom Stumped its toe The great mistake That Jamestown made Long ago. Langston Hughes, American Heartbreak From the publication of his first book in 1926, Langston Hughes was Americas acknowledged poet of color, the first to commemorate the experienceand sufferingof African Americans in a voice that no reader, black or white, could fail to hear. In this, his last collection of verse, Hughess voice is more pointed than ever before, as he explicitly addresses the racial politics of the sixties in such pieces as Prime, Motto, Dream Deferred, Frederick Douglass: 1817-1895, Still Here, Birmingham Sunday, History, Slave, Warning, and Daybreak in Alabama. Sometimes ironic, sometimes bitter, always powerful, the poems in The Panther and the Lash are the last testament of a great American writer who grappled fearlessly and artfully with the most compelling issues of his time.

This poetry is just as relevant today as the day it was written. The vast majority of it could be describing life right now in the middle of 2020. This should be studied in schools to show students the human side of the things they should be studying, but often are not, in their history classes. Wonderful, powerful, brilliant. I can‘t say enough good things about Hughes and this collection.

As a historian, I feel like I have to defend and justify my chosen field and my profession everyday, trying to convince people of this very thing. It‘s become a cliche that not learning from history dooms people to repeat it; meanwhile, we‘re sitting here repeating it. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics More and more historians have to defend ourselves against an insistence that we uphold great man history as the ONLY history, as real history, and the idea that historians are the least knowledgable about history because we want to include as many voices and experiences as possible. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 4y
GingerAntics This is possibly the most dangerous conspiracy theory out there right now, because it threatens to silence additional voices and destroy evidence that doesn‘t fit the white supremacist view of America. #LangstonHughes #ThePantherAndTheLash #poetry #GreatManHistory #WomenAlsoKnowHistory (edited) 4y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa this is what a conspiracy theory really looks like. “Historians know the least about our real history. They just want to rewrite it.” It doesn‘t matter what evidence we can show that there have always been Muslims and Jews in America, or that the idea of Christian America didn‘t exist before the Great Depression, the fact we can produce that evidence just proves, to them, their point. 4y

GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa We‘re changing the story and not telling the real story, the “white, male, Protestant” story. No amount of evidence will make them change their minds and they will willingly admit that. Your views are based on evidence and should valid evidence begin to show a different reality, your beliefs and views would shift with that. We‘re all being gaslighted. We are NOT the conspiracy theorists. (edited) 4y
Gaylagal2 @GingerAntics Thank you, it just can't be said enough. I'm not sure exactly where factual history became arguable and called conspiracy (oh I know - Drump), but I for one am dam sick of it. I'll always be on the side of facts, science and historical data 🤙👊 4y
GingerAntics @Gaylagal2 💙💙💙 there are times it seems that those of use who believe in scientific and historical data and fact are the majority, but there are far more where it seems most people are just clueless and even if they‘re not aggressively against what you‘re saying like the Cheeto‘s base, there are still people who will say “yeah, but there are other things” and they just act like we‘re not telling the whole story. 🙄 4y
Gaylagal2 My sentiment exactly 🤓 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes...both history and science are not set in stone, they change as we learn more. New studies prove this, or discover that, just like new digs and writings emerge to change our views of history. That doesn‘t make them wrong, in fact I‘d argue the fact that they are willing to change with new evidence makes them more reliable. But sometimes I feel like we are entering another “Dark” Age, where knowledge is poopooed, but everyone‘s opinion ... (edited) 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...is as good as anyone else‘s, facts or no. ☹️ 4y
GingerAntics @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I fear the same thing. I find it ironic that the very people who complain about political correctness are the same ones that want their opinion treated as fact whether it‘s supported by fact, reality, or just their own insanity and get angry if you agree to this. 🙄 Drives me nuts. I‘m sorry, but Christianity has gone too far, making everything that isn‘t in the bible unreliable. It disgusts me. 4y

This seemed to fit with another book I‘m current reading. The other book talked about freedom in a very immature way. This is a far more mature view of freedom, aware of the fact that freedom doesn‘t just magically happen and that it‘s no really available to everyone. If you can‘t bake, freedom just stays on someone else‘s cake, as it were.

I‘m surprised this isn‘t Trump‘s 2020 campaign slogan. It‘s not like he‘s too subtle for that sort of thing.
It‘s truly stunning how much of this is clearly about the 1960s, but also perfectly describes Trump‘s America.

Reading this little gem next in my adventure in poetry.

MayJasper I like the sound of poetry adventures. 😊 4y
GingerAntics @MayJasper I never really read poetry before this year. I tried a couple times and felt ridiculous (so I would stop after a poem or two), but I decided this year I was going to keep reading poetry all year and dubbed it my 2020 adventure in poetry. Turns out I really like poetry. 4y
MayJasper I am trying to get in to poetry too. I am borrowing ebooks from the library. I like quite easily accessible poems. I find some just hard work. I especially like humour in poetry. 4y

GingerAntics @MayJasper yeah, I started my adventure with Walt Whitman. Not the best place to start. I‘m going to try him again at the end of the ear. I‘ve got an audiobook of Leaves of Grass. I‘m hoping that helps. We‘ll see. I‘m thinking of doing a 2021 Adventure in Poetry (or 21 Adventures in Poetry or some kind of fun title) if you‘d like to join in. 4y
MayJasper Yes I would like to join in 😊 4y

I could not sleep last night so I started this book. There has not been enough Langston Hughes in my life.

Excited about this library haul from the other day. I‘ve been focussing on finishing on books I‘ve had going for a while (I‘ll be down to four from nine today 😬) so it‘s good to feel like I can read something new. Checked out the library‘s poetry section the first time.

Stacy_31 Nice haul! I‘ve always been fascinated by fair isle knitting, but can‘t wrap my head around it. 6y
jmofo @Stacy_31 I have never knitted from patterns. I am so nervous! But I really want to make some sweater vests for myself. Usually, I just knit and take it apart until it works. 6y
Stacy_31 @jmofo I can do freeform with crochet, but knitting is so new to me that I must follow a pattern. Good luck with your sweater vests- if you really want to, I‘m sure you can! That‘s actually how I started knitting- I became obsessed with a particular pattern and didn‘t stop until I made it. 😂😂 6y

jmofo @Stacy_31 I inherited the tagged book from my great gramma and I‘ve been using it for years. It‘s a great resource and place where I get inspired. What pattern inspired you? 6y
Stacy_31 @jmofo What a wonderfully nostalgic source of inspiration. ❤️ I wish I could say I was inspired by something as sentimental, but it was just a pair of cabled mittens on Ravelry. 😊 6y
jmofo @Stacy_31 I want to learn cable but I‘m more nervous about that than Fair Isle, apparently! 6y

From Langston Hughes' 1967 poetry volume. I was so struck by how relevant the poems are today, I want to share a few. #poetry #classicbyanauthorofcolor #readharderchallenge

I'm a VERY reluctant poetry reading but these were just fantastic. Beautiful, direct language and I actually had to pace myself so I wouldn't read this all in one go -- I really wanted to savor the words. This was checked out on a whim after I saw Hughes mentioned in quite a few other places and I am so happy I picked it up. I'm definitely buying a copy for myself.

Another of Langston Hughes' poems that foreshadows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's movement for liberty and justice for all.
