English Animals
English Animals | Laura Kaye
'A beautiful and bold debut' M.J. Hyland, author of the Man Booker-shortlisted Carry Me Down It's a long time since I've enjoyed any debut novel as much as English Animals. Its command of tone, narrative and character is so assured, and both its wit and perceptiveness about a certain kind of English life make it a joy to read' Amanda Craig English Animals is a brilliantly assured debut that fans of Nina Stibbe's writing will love. I opened my mouth to say something but she ran up the steps and into the house. I had imagined arriving at the house so many times, but it was never like this. I realised I knew nothing about these people. Richard and Sophie sounded like good names for good people. But they could be anything, they could be completely crazy. When Mirka gets a job in a country house in rural England, she has no idea of the struggle she faces to make sense of a very English couple, and a way of life that is entirely alien to her. Richard and Sophie are chaotic, drunken, frequently outrageous but also warm, generous and kind to Mirka, despite their argumentative and turbulent marriage. Mirka is swiftly commandeered by Richard for his latest money-making enterprise, taxidermy, and soon surpasses him in skill. After a traumatic break two years ago with her family in Slovakia, Mirka finds to her surprise that she is happy at Fairmont Hall. But when she tells Sophie that she is gay, everything she values is put in danger and she must learn the hard way what she really believes in. English Animals is a funny, subversive, poignant and beautifully written novel about a doomed love affair, a certain kind of Englishness and prejudice.

English Animals had some of the realest characters I think I‘ve ever met in a book. I felt like two of the main characters, Richard and Sophie especially were people I had met in real life before. It is a lovely slow read, with the relationships between the three characters developing, with an interesting backdrop of taxidermy and the English countryside

I‘ve had a pretty crappy reading year so far, but I finally finished a book I enjoyed! English Animals was full of quirky characters, well written with a good plot. I picked this up after a visit to the tiny natural history museum in Lille, France which is full of taxidermied animals -super creepy but it reminded me that I had not read this book. A very entertaining read and I recommend it to anyone who likes small town quirkiness.

#day6 #junetunz #brokedownpalace Maybe not quite palaces, but these 3 novels came to mind... Eccentric property-rich folks living in a crumbling castle (I capture the castle), a home-turned-artists commune (in The Strays) and in my current read... the 'English Animals' are not just the those preserved by taxidermy, but also the mostly drunk Richard and Sophie, whose manor house seems to be falling apart around them!

Cinfhen Totally new to me book...English Animals...how is it so far? 7y
KarenUK Quirky for sure, but I kind of love reading about eccentric people like this... @Cinfhen 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I first heard of English Animals from Mercedes, from MercysBoookishMusings, whom I follow on booktube. It was in the video "A Chatty Book Haul" I love the English booktubers bc they inform me of books I may not otherwise be exposed to. 7y

Not much to say about this. Really couldn't finish. Guess I am tired of reading about eccentric white people and their issues

I read at least a couple novels last year that featured taxidermists. What does it say about me that this one, similarly-themed, also sounds interesting? You're dying to tell me to get stuffed, aren't you?

saresmoore 😂 I like the green cover...and the fox! 8y
KarenUK I'm intrigued! What were the other two? I read this last year... 8y

KarenUK And this sounds great! Stacked! 📚 8y
LeahBergen @saresmoore I think so!! ? Do we have to add foxes to your "subjects on green covers" banned list?? 8y
saresmoore @LeahBergen There's a good chance hedgehogs will make the list, too. I can't resist a hedgehog! 8y
