The Letter for the King
The Letter for the King | Tonke Dragt
15 posts | 16 read | 21 to read
The thrilling story of one boy's battle against evil set in an enchanted world of chivalry, courage, and true friendship Sixteen-year-old Tiuri must spend hours locked in a chapel in silent contemplation if he is to be knighted the next day. But as he waits by the light of a flickering candle, he hears a knock at the door and a voice desperately asking for help. A secret letter must be delivered to King Unauwen across the Great Mountains--a letter upon which the fate of the entire kingdom depends. Tiuri has a vital role to play, one that might cost him his knighthood. He must trust no one. He must keep his true identity secret. Above all, he must never reveal what is in the letter . . . Tiuri's journey will take him through dark, menacing forests, across treacherous rivers, to sinister castles and strange cities. He will encounter evil enemies who would kill to get the letter, but also the best of friends in the most unexpected places.

I bought this for my nine year old son who didn‘t want to read it. I‘d have loved The letter for the king at his age. Reading it as an adult was enjoyable but only ok. However, considering that Dragt wrote it when she was a child is truly remarkable. That‘s why I gave it a pick. I would say this appeals to kids aged 8-10.

CaramelLunacy Loved it when I read as a child, but hated the Netflix show (unfortunately) 4mo
Anna40 @CaramelLunacy I haven‘t watched the show. That‘s a shame. I think I would have loved reading it as a child too 4mo

Tirillo smiled. “That‘s right,” he said. “When King Unauwen gave it to me, he said, ‘One does not need to carry a sword and a shield to be a knight.‘”
“Yes,” said Tiuri. “Yes, of course.”
It was true. Why should a jester not be among the king‘s most faithful paladins? Tirillo was worthy of such a ring. He knew how to cheer people up when they were downhearted, and that was a gift few people shared.

Translation by Laura Wilkinson
Starts off a bit simplistically but improves later. I like the way all the rivers are named for colours. And the way the inns are named (Setting Sun, First Night) are poetic too.

I read this because I watched the Netflix-series and was interested how the book was. I think it's a good thing that I saw the series first, because if I had read the book before watching it, I would have not been able to appreciate it as I do now. The two are very different, but done well in their own way.

I didn‘t realize this show that @VioletCavalier and I are watching was based off of a book, until I saw it mentioned in the opening credits of episode one! So far it‘s intriguing.
#Netflix #BookToScreen

AkashaVampie That's how I find alot of my books... watching and then finding out in the credits that it's a book. 4y

What a beautiful day for reading! I dragged my grandparents‘ old leather armchair into the sun, re-reading an old favourite that I probably read for the first time in this chair - feels like time travel!

I‘ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately. I just bailed on The Alienist because it was so dense. I‘m hoping this beauty will set me right!

How did I not know that this has been turned into a Netflix series? Was browsing yesterday and thought, ooh that has the same title as that book I loved as a kid, read the description and let out a teeny squee - guess I‘m sorted for things to watch. It‘s just a shame that I got this from the library when I was a kid, would love to read it again. Will have to add it to the next order ...

A childhood favorite of mine. Reading this again brings back so many memories of being immersed in its world. I had forgotten, though, just how much help Tiuri gets and the fairy tale-like decency and patience of (most of) the people he encounters. Also I seem to have built up Lavinia's role a lot more in my mind! More adventures for Lavinia!

I finished my book over a little glass of Stroopwaffel liqueur, a sweet rich drink with the caramel waffle goodness of stroopwafel. Try it in your coffee 😉

When I began Letter for the King, I wasn't sure that I would enjoy it, but once I adjusted to the style of address, I was drawn into Tiuri's journey. I loved Piak, a friend and ally he met on his quest.

Details, review & bitterballen recipe on my blog - http://www.graymyrtle.com/book-blog

LeahBergen Stroopwaffel liqueur?? 😮😮 (edited) 6y
mabell @LeahBergen I know! I found it as World Market! It is really tasty, but a little goes a LONG way 6y

TaylorMay Ooh I will have to try this as well. Sounds delightful 6y
mabell @Laura317 @TaylorMay If you have a World Market nearby, I found it there! A yummy, inexpensive luxury (it was about $10) 😄 6y

I‘ve been taking my time in the Netherlands, especially since my wealthy aunt is paying for a stay at the Kasteel. I‘ll enjoy the luxury a bit longer - reading, eating delicious bitterballen, and cycling through the countryside - before packing up and moving on to Belgium.

(I was able to wheedle the bitterballen recipe out of the chef, and I‘ll post it on my blog soon with all my experiences in the Netherlands)

Well, I've encountered an early hiccup in my #BackpackEurope trip. I'm in the Netherlands, and my bag with my book - isn't. The notice says it's "in transit," so I'll have a little free time to explore before digging into my chosen book.

A perfect opportunity to take @Gissy 's suggestion and check out the bookshops!

ElishaLovesBooks Looks amazing! Have a great time! 6y
Gissy @mabell So beautiful! I can feel like I'm there, like Belle in the Beauty and Beast movie all surrounding by books! Enjoy your trip! I bet you will collect some books (not buying because it sounds like a book addiction☺️) 6y
BookMaven407 Sounds like an awesome trip! 6y
mabell @ElishaLovesBooks @BookMaven407 I'm having a great time planning my route! #BackpackEurope just started July 2 - did you consider joining in? 🙌 https://thereadersroom.org/summer-2018-reading-challenge-backpack-across-europe/ (edited) 6y
mabell @Gissy Absolutely! We'll call it collecting 😂 PS You should join the #BackpackEurope challenge! It just started on the 2nd! https://thereadersroom.org/summer-2018-reading-challenge-backpack-across-europe/ 6y

After finally deciding on my travel plans, I will begin my #BackpackEurope trip by diving into the Netherlands!

While traveling there, I will read the much-acclaimed, The Letter for the King. My adventures will be chronicled here and on my new blog (https://www.graymyrtle.com/book-blog), which I started to track my journey. 😊

hilded Really nice blog you have created:) Happy travels! 6y
Gissy I had seen so pretty bookstores there! Enjoy the trip! 6y
mabell @hilded Thank you! Maybe we'll run into each other along the way! 😉 6y

mabell @Gissy Oh great idea! I must remember to look into bookstores while I'm "traveling"! ? 6y
BookwormM Enjoy I was physically there for work 2 weeks ago got to spend a whole hour in the city rest of the time was at office or airport 🤣🤣 6y
Gissy @mabell I always look for bookstores when I travel🤷🏻‍♀️it must be an addition! Looking for books about folklore, traditions of the country or any peculiar book! 6y
mabell @BookwormM That's awful! How frustrating! Maybe you will return to get to enjoy it. 😊 In the meantime, I'll share pics 😉 6y
mabell @Gissy I'm sure we're all subject to the same addiction! 😂 You're right, though - finding local books is a highlight of bookstores abroad. 6y
Gissy @mabell You are not going to believe it, but I still have some cookies in the refrigerator! Eating them slowly. I received a cute reading journal that goes from July to December 2018 but I already have one which I received in a box subscription. Are you interesting to have it? It has space to write quotes and to track the books read by month. Let me know. I'm asking because maybe you have one already. 6y
mabell @Gissy That is so sweet of you, I'd love it! ❤️ I've never had a reading journal that is divided into months. It sounds fun! So glad you're still enjoying the cookies! There is more where those came from 😉 6y
Gissy @mabell I will send it to you during this week or early next week. It's nice to have a reading journal🤗 6y
mabell @Gissy Thank you so much of thinking of me! And it's perfect timing - I'll have lots of books to record from my imaginary Europe tour. 😄 6y

A Dutch children's classic only recently translated into English, THE LETTER FOR THE KING is a medieval adventure tale of a young squire sent on mission, to take a letter to the king, right before he's to be knighted. Though a little long, it's a great read. | ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Flower_Fairy I read this a couple of years ago. It's not something that would usually interest me, but I'm so glad I took a chance on it because I really enjoyed it 8y
