The Family from One End Street
The Family from One End Street | Eve Garnett
6 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
The story of everyday life in the big, happy Ruggles family who live in the small town of Otwell. Father is a dustman and Mother a washerwoman. Then there's all the children - practical Lily Rose, clever Kate, mischievous twins James and John, followed by Jo, who loves films, little Peg and finally baby William. A truly classic book awarded the Carnegie Medal as the best children's book of 1937.

Perfect NYE reading.

I read the second two of these as a child, but never the first one, so @TrishB found me a copy a couple of years back (thank you Trish!). A big, happy, resourceful 1930s working-class family (7 children, Mum‘s a washerwoman, Dad‘s a dustman) who get up to adventures, worry about money (and the police/sanitary inspector being called) and are prone to big Ideas. Still a delight. And I need to track down Garnett‘s biography now.

rockpools Not too well today, so turning in mega-early. Have a wonderful New Year, if you‘re celebrating, and see you tomorrow! 3y

@kathedron 🌿🌱Thank you -this sounds amazing ! Hoping to find more woodland walks this year myself as well. I‘m sure I know of Sara Maitland from something else... Going to enjoy investigating 🌳

rockpools @TrishB This made me laugh so much! Yes, this was the One End Street book I never read - thank you - I‘ll enjoy it loads 😊. And I‘ve bought the Salt Path for more than one person, cos it sounds so good, but never actually got as far as reading it myself. Thank you so much 😘😘😘

And did I mention I may have a new favourite greetings card artist?

rockpools The last book is from my brother, who only really reads music/food-related but heard I‘d read a graphic novel this year (Shock! Horror!) and went off to investigate what was out there. How cool is that??! 5y

Last Saturday was our National Children's Day in Thailand. To celebrate the day I picked up this book to reread. It's my most favorite book when I was a kid. Almost 30 years have passed and it's still lovely and not boring at all :)
