Jane's Fame
Jane's Fame: How Jane Austen Conquered the World | Claire Harman
11 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
"Wonderful . . . not only scholarly but indecently entertaining . . . her prose rings with good sense, affection, and humour."Daily Mail Mention Jane Austen and you'll likely incite a slew of fervent opinions from anyone within earshot. Regarded as a brilliant social satirist by scholars, Austen also enjoys the sort of popular affection usually reserved for girl-next-door movie stars, leading to the paradox of an academically revered author who has served as the inspiration for chick lit (The Jane Austen Book Club) and modern blockbusters (Becoming Jane). Almost two hundred years after her death, Austen remains a hot topic, and the current flare in the cultural zeitgeist echoes the continuous revival of her works, from the time of original publication through the twentieth century. In Jane's Fame, Claire Harman gives us the complete biographyof both the author and her lasting cultural influencemaking this essential reading for anyone interested in Austen's life, works, and remarkably potent fame.

I meant to do this ages ago, but better late than never. I bought this book twice, read and enjoyed it, and recommend it to JA fans. I hope my extra copy finds a good home!

As I was leaving my tutoring session this morning, I stopped at the cart outside marked free books. Now, I had the strength to pass it going inside, but to pass it twice and not peek was more than I could handle. And of course, I had to take one home! #pemberlittens

Pickpick

I‘m curious about the low rating here. This was an interesting read, a low pick for me. Harman traces Austen‘s trajectory from struggling unpublished author through brief success and then the ups and downs after her death. I wish some of the attributed quotes had included an explanation of just who this speaker was (just a name with no clues why we should care, or perhaps we should know who this is?), but overall found this pretty interesting.

ravenlee I wonder if the low rating is because someone expected more details about Jane‘s life or the novels, but this book is precisely what it says on the cover. 3y

“The fact that it [first film adaptation of P&P] was an American production of a British classic gently reflected the relation of the Allies in the war and the heritage that both countries were jointly defending.”

Well, that‘s a nice sentiment and all, but in 1940 while this was being filmed the US WASN‘T defending anything yet...

The last #bookhaul pic, I promise - mostly inspired by the #PemberLittens! What‘s embarrassing, though, is that the last post for the tagged was mine...when I bought it two years ago 🤦🏻‍♀️. At least I haven‘t spent much on either copy! So stay tuned for a future giveaway of my extra.

Dollar store #bookhaul for @BookaholicNatty today! The tagged book is for me, the rest is for the class. My first time getting books at the dollar store (my usual store has a pitiful book section) but it won't be the last.

BookaholicNatty @ravenlee ohhhh Anne!!!! The kids will absolutely love these soooo much! ❤️❤️❤️ 6y
ravenlee @BookaholicNatty I'm so happy to do it! Plus, I'm not supposed to be buying books for us because we're moving this fall (super hard!) so it scratches the itch to buy for someone else! 6y
BookaholicNatty @ravenlee I loooove buying for other people more than I love buying for myself I think! ❤️ 6y
ravenlee I found two more at a different dollar store today, too! This is fun. 6y

Anyone else sign up for this course through Future Learn? I‘ve taken courses in the past, but I‘m very excited about this one, for obvious reasons. 😉 The course material is available starting today, and you can still sign up. Visit https://www.futurelearn.com for more information.

Andrea4 Never even heard of this site till now! Thanks for sharing-this is wonderful! 6y

AnneCecilie How does this work? Do I need to buy any books? 6y
Librarybelle @AnneCecilie It‘s all online. You can register for a free account. There is an option to opt in for additional content in continued access to the course once it has finished, but there is a fee to it. This particular course runs until June. Every week is a new lesson; you can do the work at your pace. No books are required, though I‘ve taken courses in the past that suggested titles were added to my TBR list. No pressure either, which is great! 6y
LeahBergen Oh, I‘m off to investigate! 6y
JANEissarilyAUSTENtatious I‘ll advertise this on the page! 6y
ferskner OH MY GOSH!!!!! What are the assignments like? I would love to take this but also have fairly limited time right now. 6y
Librarybelle @ferskner I‘m not sure yet...I didn‘t get a chance to start! But, if it‘s like other courses I‘ve taken, you watch some videos, read some passages, maybe comment on your thoughts and impressions. Each week is divided into a series of steps; you complete a step to move on to the next one. You don‘t have to complete each step - it‘s not graded, so you could skip around if you wanted to. I hope your move went well!! 6y
DivineDiana Thank you! I signed up for the course! 6y

In #homage to Jane Austen, I give you a picture of two of my Austen related books in my collection. Harman writes about the fanaticism over Austen, using what we know of Jane‘s life and Jane‘s overall legacy to tell Jane‘s full story.

Growing Older examines the art of aging in Jane‘s novels. #aprella

tjwill I thought that Growing Older was The Book of Speculation at first. It‘s weird how similar the two covers are. Could that be the same picture with some photo editing? 🤔 6y
Librarybelle @tjwill Yes! When books have similar covers, I do a double take. 6y
