Book of Speculation
Book of Speculation | Erika Swyler
One of BuzzFeed's 24 Best Fiction Books of 2015"As Simon, a lonely research librarian, searches frantically for the key to a curse that might be killing the women in his family, he learns strange and fascinating secrets about their past. A tale full of magic and family mystery, "The Book of Speculation" will keep you up all night reading." Isaac Fitzgerald, BuzzFeed Simon Watson, a young librarian, lives alone in a house that is slowly crumbling toward the Long Island Sound. His parents are long dead. His mother, a circus mermaid who made her living by holding her breath, drowned in the very water his house overlooks. His younger sister, Enola, ran off six years ago and now reads tarot cards for a traveling carnival. One June day, an old book arrives on Simon's doorstep, sent by an antiquarian bookseller who purchased it on speculation. Fragile and water damaged, the book is a log from the owner of a traveling carnival in the 1700s, who reports strange and magical things, including the drowning death of a circus mermaid. Since then, generations of "mermaids" in Simon's family have drowned--always on July 24, which is only weeks away.As his friend Alice looks on with alarm, Simon becomes increasingly worried about his sister. Could there be a curse on Simon's family? What does it have to do with the book, and can he get to the heart of the mystery in time to save Enola? In the tradition of Sara Gruen's "Water for Elephants, "Erin Morgenstern's "The Night Circus, "and Elizabeth Kostova's "The Historian, The Book of Speculation"--with two-color illustrations by the author--is Erika Swyler's moving debut novel about the power of books, family, and magic.

This book was fascinating. Written in a dual timeline, we follow the lives of several people from a traveling circus in the 17-1800‘s up through today. The main group being a maternal line of mermaids, or divers that can hold their breath for 10 minutes…but who all end up dying by drowning on July 24th.

I‘ve had a great reading month! The Book of Speculation takes the February slot. It couldn‘t not. It felt tailor-made for me. The collection of memoir/science essays by Nell Greenfieldboyce, Transient & Strange, was pretty fab, too, though! If I had to guess right now, I‘d say T&S may end up snagging one of the bonus spots for the first half of the year.

Turtle Diary could sweep the whole board. It‘s pretty singular. 🐢

You know how you can sometimes just sense that someone is your kind of person?

I read this in Swyler‘s bio AFTER declaring my love for her. When you know, you know. 🐇

Scochrane26 I have this book and still haven‘t read it. Loved her Light From Other Stars (?) though 2mo
monalyisha @Scochrane26 As did I! I can‘t believe how long I let this languish on my shelves. I‘ve already checked to see if she has any forthcoming novels — and she does! It‘s called We Lived on the Horizon and is about a “bio-prosthetic surgeon and her personal AI.” If I weren‘t already a devotee of the author, I might have skipped it based on the synopsis, but I‘m sure it‘ll be amazing. Swyler describes her own book as being “difficult to explain: a dual narrative in two time periods, an abundance of plot threads, circus, tarot, drowning, horseshoe crabs, a house falling off a cliff, all as told by a reclusive librarian.”

I know this book isn‘t for everyone but it was absolutely for me. I love Erika Swyler‘s writing, her sensibilities. I can‘t say how much I enjoyed this heartbreaking and salt-stained novel.

Fortifiedbybooks If you look closely, that is the exact same picture, but they edited it slightly by removing one book and the bracelets on her left arm and adjusting the distance so that you can't see the whole sleeve on the right or the waistband. julesG @Fortifiedbybooks Exactly what I thought. Is this hoping people will pick it up because they confuse it with the other? 6mo
Fortifiedbybooks @julesG I would be more likely to NOT pick it up, thinking I had already read it. I've read The Book of Speculation. It was good, but I don't know about First Impressions. First Impressions was published first, about a year prior, and other than the cover, the books don't seem to have anything in common and are completely different stories. 6mo

This was a low pick for me. It was fascinating & a bit quirky, a family saga with interwoven timelines gradually revealing the secrets of the past—and a mysterious book at the heart of it all. Following the family through its lost history was interesting, but I didn‘t connect with it as much as I wanted to. The characters felt a bit distant. The settings were so rich & vivid, though—I‘d love to see a film adaptation! This was my June #DoubleSpin.

monalyisha Did you read her other one? (I loved that one, so I‘m wondering if it‘s her writing you‘re not blown away by or just this specific book.) 2y
BarbaraJean @monalyisha I haven‘t read her other one—hadn‘t heard of it! Honestly I think it‘s just this specific book. I can‘t think of any issues I had with the writing, just a sense of disconnection with the book overall. I wasn‘t turned off to her as a writer, and I‘d be interested to see how I feel about this other one. 2y

I‘m a little late but I read 29 books in August a lot less than normal but between COVID and starting a new job (which I LOVE!) I‘ve found less time and space in my brain to read at times.

I read so many great books though!
Some stand outs:

Graphic novels:
• Isla to Island
• Little Monarchs

Audiobooks:
• Obie is Man Enough
• Thanks a Lot Universe
• The Book of Speculation
• All Systems Red

lots of great books but those are my standouts!

I‘ve cleared the decks on my fiction reading, so I‘m deciding what to read next. I pulled these five from the shelf; all of them are on my June #BookSpin list and I‘m not sure which I‘m most in the mood for. After looking through Goodreads and Litsy reviews/ratings, I think I‘ve narrowed it down to the three in the foreground… now to read the first few paragraphs of each and see which pulls me in. What‘s your method for picking your next read?

“Perhaps the book opened a door; books have a way of causing ripples.”

This one checked many of my favorite boxes:

✔️ Dual timelines
✔️ Fascinating historical fiction
✔️ Engaging modern characters
✔️ Book about books
✔️ Touch of magic and whimsy

I may have been the last person on earth to read it, but I listened to the audio and really enjoyed it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Scochrane26 I started it earlier this year, but got distracted by other books. Wasn‘t in the mood at the time but will eventually read it. 3y

Interesting premise—mysterious book, mermaids, traveling carnival. Lackluster execution.

I realized I was forcing myself to keep reading, so I finally bailed at 50%. I did skim the last chapter and felt weary that I wasted so much time even reading 50%.

This story was enchanting. Bright, imaginative characters that really came to life. Their intertwined fates paired with curses and magic really gave the plot it's roots. Sadness and hope braided tightly together through time. I only wished the author had spent more time on the "what's next" part for the characters.

You can read this book at leisure but you'll also find yourself with an itch to see where the next chapter is taking you. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Erika Swyler's writing style is the kind that has you yearning for her words. I craved this story whenever my responsibilities called and I was forced to put it down for a while. A lonely librarian makes for an intriguing protagonist especially as he searches for answers down a long line of family tragedies. There's a profound sadness to this story, but there's magic sprinkled in.

Scochrane26 You should definitely read her Light from Other Stars. It‘s sci-fi, but I focused on the relationships in the story. 4y
