Book: The Life Story of a Technology
Book: The Life Story of a Technology | Nicole Howard
5 posts | 1 reading | 1 to read
The printed book is one of life's most frequently encountered technologies. Historian Nicole Howard provides a comprehensive survey of the evolution of this technology, tracing its development across many centuries and cultures. No other technology in human history, declares Howard, has had the impact of this invention. By examining the book as a technology, Howard reveals how profoundly information and media have shaped history and how vital the technology of the book has been to cultural and intellectual change. This engaging study extends from clay tablets and rolls of papyrus to bound folio sheets, from inks and scripts to lead type and printing presses, from the Linotype machine to the laptop. Cross-cultural in scope, it examines innovations in the production and manufacture of books from the Middle and Far East, Europe, and the Americas. Howard recounts printing techniques from Gutenberg's first press to 21st-century electronic publishing.Howard's broad overview and accessible writing style make this book ideal for students and bibliophiles alike. The volume includes a glossary of terms, a timeline of important events, and a selected bibliography of useful resources for further information.

Looking into books I need to order from 🇬🇧 because I can‘t get them here. @EadieB @Andrew65 remember when I checked all the Folletts at the library and bought the ones they didn‘t have? Well, it happened again... after I rechecked 3/4 have “disappeared”. So, now I‘m online buying again, because our next read is suddenly not in the library. Any other books/authors I should look into that we are meant to read?

EadieB Did you want to read this series? @Andrew65 and @gradcat are going to start it the end of July. I think I tagged you about it. The 1st 2 books are so-so but then they get better. This is the 1st book 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘m keeping my fingers crossed that I can get hold of this. 5y

Y‘all. I can‘t believe I did this, but I boxed up at least 15 boxes of books and got rid of 3 book shelves. I had to do it. I was taking over the house and living space for my family. I actually feel a little relieved now that it‘s done. I filled all the little free libraries in town, donated some to the library and am giving the rest to my sister in law who is building a mini-version of the Beasts library. I feel good.

BookwormAHN Way to go 👏🏻 5y
