The Penderwicks in Spring
The Penderwicks in Spring | Jeanne Birdsall
29 posts | 28 read | 7 to read
With over one million copies sold, this series of modern classics about the charming Penderwick family, from National Book Award winner and New York Times bestseller Jeanne Birdsall, is perfect for fans of Noel Streatfeild and Edward Eager. Springtime is finally arriving on Gardam Street, and there are surprises in store for each member of the family. Some surprises are just wonderful, like neighbor Nick Geiger coming home from war. And some are ridiculous, like Battys new dog-walking business. Batty is saving up her dog-walking money for an extra-special surprise for her family, which she plans to present on her upcoming birthday. But when some unwelcome surprises make themselves known, the best-laid plans fall apart. Filled with all the heart, hilarity, and charm that has come to define this beloved clan, The Penderwicks in Spring is about fun and family and friends (and dogs), and what happens when you bring what's hidden into the bright light of the spring sun.

This is Batty‘s story, and Ben‘s too, as Batty approaches her 11th birthday. That‘s a jump of about five years from the last book (and since the first three happened over about two years it feels abrupt). There‘s a lot of heartbreak here, with backstory about how Lizzy (mom) died, the recent loss of Hound tearing a hole in Batty‘s heart, Nick‘s all-too-brief leave from war, and Skye battling Jeffrey‘s crush and everyone losing in the process.

ravenlee Third finish of #AwesomeAugust and plugging along in sharing this series with the kiddo, who‘s loving it. 2y

I am loving this series of books. This one skips 5 years from the one before and focused on Batty Penderwick an almost 11 year old girl as she deals with grief, discovers a new musical talent, and strikes out with her own neighborhood business. It tackles typical childhood problems, the kids have good mentors, the girls are interested in a wide variety of topics and are good friends to each other.

Sky is the Amy of the Penderwicks. I cried for poor Batty, and for Mr Penderwick , but have no sympathy for mean-spirited Sky. I found this book by far the most emotional of the series - Batty‘s grief at Hound‘s death and her attempts to hide what she had overheard Sky saying were gut-wrenching. It cemented Batty as my favourite Penderwick, but Nick is my favourite character. Well, except for the military thing.

I love this family! With the addition of Lydia, the loss of Hound and Batty & Skye coming to terms with some serious subjects, this is another wonderful addition to the Penderwick story! #BBRC #MiddleGrade #MoreThan250Pages @LibrarianRyan #chuggingalong

LibrarianRyan I have had this series on my TBR for a while. 4y
IamIamIam @LibrarianRyan It's as close to warm and fuzzy as I can stand but only because the girls are so real. I feel like it's a modern day Little Women, which I have moderate tolerance for. That's saying a lot!! Lol, I'm hesitant to get the next book because it's the last one!! 😭😭 4y
mjtwo Oh I agree with the Little Women comparison @LibrarianRyan ! In my mind Sky embodies both the unlikeable Amy and the frustrating Jo (when she rejects Laurie). I wholeheartedly dislike her! 3y

I‘m a sap but this book made me cry multiple times. My second favorite so far in the series (I‘ve liked the first best) and the storyline/conflicts were a lot easier for Mor to understand, though still led to good conversations about death, relationships, etc. #MordecaiReads #audiobook

As expected, I fought tears through most of this book. Poor Batty is dealing with so much. And Skye is just a jerk.

Anyway, Penderwicks are always awesome and this is no exception.

#14books14weeks number 11. I think I‘m gonna make it!

But the car wouldn‘t move for her, either.

I have put off reading this book because of the death of Hound. As expected, I‘m fighting tears a lot so far.

Ben was in second grade and still believed everything his teacher told him....Having made it all the way to fifth grade, Batty had learned to be wary of teachers...

Quotable on page 1 is a good sign!

I read some comments that said readers were lost if they didn‘t read the rest of the series.

This book has great sentence structure and excellent vocabulary. Without reading it, I can tell that this book has a ton of adventure and would be great for kids. The characters seem so versatile and like any kid could relate to them.

I can‘t believe I never reviewed this! The 4th Penderwicks book is by far my favorite. It mostly focuses on Batty, who‘d been almost a background character for me before. The depth we get to see with her here is just beautiful—her shyness & sensitivity, her musical passion & talent—and suddenly she‘s my favorite Penderwick. The emotional depth here is wonderful as well—the way one misunderstanding can cut so deeply. I‘m not a crier, but: 😭💔😍

Batty Penderwick is ten, continuing to develop her love of music, and dealing with loss. This fourth in the series made me laugh and cry, even on a reread. Just delightful - and I highly recommend the audio version as well.

You guys, I read SIXTEEN books in July. I know a lot of Littens read this quantity or more with regularity, but this is A LOT for me. I suppose there was that readathon, so...😁 My favorite is tagged. Sing, Unburied, Sing & Parable of the Talents were excellent. I also loved Pocket Full of Rye & El Deafo. A great month!!

I just love this series. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Only one book left now though 😢

smilingshelves I'm so glad there is one more! I hadn't realized after reading book four that she planned on writing another. And I'm so happy you love these books as much as I do! I definitely need a reread soon! 6y
BucklingBookshelves @smilingshelves I‘m so glad there is a fifth book too! I‘ve got half my family wanting to read the series now too — it‘s like there is a family hold list for my copies LOL 6y

Finished up the Penderwicks series this spring and I'm kind of sad that there are no more books left in the series! I love this sweet family and so glad I bought these for my daughter. 💜

While my favorite book about four sisters is Little Women, the four sisters in the Penderwicks are a very close second. 💕

Books don't make me cry very often, but this one just did. I don't think I've ever wanted to hug a character this bad!

I've been putting off reading this one because then there will be no more new Penderwick books to read. But I'm thinking this spring is finally time to read it. I'll just have to read slowly and savor it!
