Death and Taxes
Death and Taxes | David Dodge
4 posts
The first novel from one of the greatest of mystery writers, the man who would later go on to write TO CATCH A THIEF. Often compared to Dashiell Hammett, David Dodge's urbane writing style stands the test of time. His novels still show the hallmarks of being fresh, fast-paced and witty. Whit Whitney is the last person youd want to meet. The taxman is no ones best friend. But in 1940s San Francisco, theres a price to pay for murder, romance, and heavy drinking, and the taxman turned detective is coming to collect. Hilarious and twisty, Dodges first novel is among his best, and makes for a terrific introduction to one of last centurys greatest talents in mystery.

I‘ve seen a lot of misinformation about government employees on social media. One of the most ridiculous assertions is that government employees don‘t pay taxes. This is news to me! I‘ve been paying taxes on my wages since I started working in high school, through college, and as a #longtimefed for 35+ years. I still pay taxes on some of my retirement income. The same applies for teachers, firefighters, state workers, and other public servants.

Tamra 🤦🏽‍♀️ it‘s inexplicable. (edited) 3d
ImperfectCJ So many misconceptions. I spoke with a medical doctor yesterday who didn't know that the NIH was part of the federal government and didn't understand the link between cutting federal funding and colleges decreasing the number of science graduate students they could accept. I just...ugh. I don't mean to imply that I have a firm understanding about how everything works, but I feel pretty confident that I understand the basic structure. 3d
TieDyeDude That hurts my brain. Why would someone make up a lie like that, unless there is no practical reason for these fed lay-offs and supporters need to make up easily refutable stories to justify this administration's actions in their own minds... 🤔 😵 😔 3d

marleed I‘m retired fed civil service (38 years). I paid taxes then. I pay taxes now. And honestly, I‘m good with paying taxes to support roads, libraries, education, keeping SS solvent, healthcare, emergency response, military, peace keeping mission, altruistic endeavors and so much more. I don‘t want to pay the taxes of billionaires who have the accountants and the exception‘s to avoid their responsibility. 3d
marleed And another thing… In 2022-23 the average cost of educating one student was $17,650. I have 2 grown children who were in public schools k-13. Without adjusting for inflation, my taxes for those 13 years of education is $458,900. My taxes did not pay the direct education of my own kids. It went to the education of the US. Just stop it with private school vouchers. Our best natural resource is the education of our children. 2d
Susanita @marleed I don‘t think anyone “likes” paying taxes, but I definitely like what taxes pay for, nationally and locally. I like public land and schools and libraries and sidewalks and food testing and so much more. Vouchers are a scam. 2d
Susanita @TieDyeDude The more I think about it, the more absurd it seems to me. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 2d

I‘m finally getting to the taxes when I really just want to read my book. Hopefully, a big refund check will mean a trip to the bookstore.

Just paid my taxes ya'll (😳) and have decided to enforce a strict budget for the next couple of months!! That unfortunately includes my book spending habits. No excuses, for three months minimum I will only read what I already own (the only caveat being BOTM/Audible credits that I already have). Gahhh, wish me luck 😂

Aims42 Sending you good luck vibes!!! 7y
L_auren You can do it!! Fall in love with your library! 7y

Ashley_Nicoletto @L_auren I started using the library a few years ago and I almost never buy anymore. 😍 Definitely good advice. 7y
Lcsmcat Using the library can help you discover new authors that aren‘t getting the current hype. 7y
Redwritinghood 🤞🏻🤞🏻 7y
GypsyKat Good luck! 🤞🤞🤞 7y
MelindaCooper Use the library :) Also sign up to Book Bub. They‘ll often have free books to download for the kindle 7y
merelybookish You can do it! I use my library audio/ebook aps (overdrive, hoopla, axis360) a ton! I can't keep up with all they offer. 7y
Bklover Good luck!!! 7y
bookandbedandtea We're waiting to hear what/if we owe. I might not be buying anything for a while either- should know by Monday. 😭 Meanwhile, the library is there for both of us! 7y
RachLovesTV Ditto what everyone is saying about the library! I almost never buy books anymore. 😱 My library system is amazing and has almost everything I need! 7y
Kaye You can do it. We‘ve recently come to a place in life where unnecessary spending has to stop. It‘s actually a good feeling to bring home an armload of books , count up the money you would have spent, and know you DIDNT 👍. I can still read til my eyeballs fall out, and not spend a dime to do it 😁 Great hobby (edited) 7y
swishandflick Thanks guys! I definitely need to utilize the library more, when I moved to NYC I didn't get a state ID so I kept putting off going very there and "proving" that I live here. No more excuses, though! I also have a TON of books on my shelf, so I'm mostly just being difficult, haha @Aims42 @L_auren @Tamra @Ashley_Nicoletto @Lcsmcat @Redwritinghood @GypsyKat @MelindaCooper @merelybookish @Bklover @bookandbedandtea @RachLovesTV @Kaye 7y
RachLovesTV Hey, no shame. The heart wants what it wants, and sometimes the heart wants a giant stack of new books, even if all the old books are crying on their shelves because they haven't been read yet. 😉 Most of mine are in tubs because I don't have enough shelf space, so hopefully they didn't hear that thing I said about the library. 😳 7y
minkyb It is a good goal. It is shocking how the small purchases total up! Good luck. 7y
