Reference and Information Services
Reference and Information Services: An Introduction | Kay Ann Cassell, Uma Hiremath
4 posts | 4 read
Designed to complement every introductory library reference course, this is the perfect text for students and librarians looking to expand their personal reference knowledge, teaching failsafe methods for identifying important materials by matching specific types of questions to the best available sources, regardless of format. Guided by a national advisory board of educators and practitioners including Eileen Abels, Anita Ondrusek, Marie L. Radford, and Steven Tash, this text expertly keeps up with new technologies and practices while remaining grounded in the basics of reference work. As librarians experience a changing climate for all information services professionals, Cassell and Hiremath provide the tools needed to manage the ebb and flow of changing reference services in the 21st century.

“In 1876, Samuel Green, librarian of the Worcester Free Public Library in MA, developed the idea of having librarians assist users in the selection of books to suit their needs.”

Me: “HEY! That‘s my hometown!” 🙌🏻

“Green saw the role of the public library as one of welcoming users by having a pleasant & cultivated female staff.”

Me: Oh, Jesus Christ...

Also me [to my husband]: “Honey, would you say I‘m pleasant & cultivated?”
Him: “No.”

🙈😂

monalyisha Note: He DID go on to qualify that yes, I am pleasant...but NO, I am not “cultivated.” 😆 I can‘t disagree. 6y

Truer words were never written ???

An excerpt from Deng, Evolution of Library Reference Services ... all my current reading is thesis related these days ?‍♀️

The quote finishes "... which go to make the library spirit"

ReadingEnvy True. You know you've crossed the line when a student starts backing ... away.. 7y
BethwithBooks @ReadingEnvy When the man of the house asks me a question I always asks if he wants the librarian answer or the condensed version 😆 7y
ReadingEnvy @BethwithBooks heh. What this book doesn't get into is the amazing feats of psychic phenomenon librarians pull off, because we pay attention and are ready for what we figure out people will ask for. I've freaked people out many a time! 7y

Book learning what I've learned by experience. This'll be interesting.
