House of Secrets
House of Secrets | Darcy Coates
10 posts | 12 read | 6 to read
Sophie and Joseph's escape from Northwood is short-lived. The beast survived, and attached itself to Joseph's young cousin, Elise. Garrett writes to beg for their help. Joseph and Sophie travel to meet him at Kensington, a long-abandoned mansion that overlooks a dead town. The house offers a small hope: its original owner had dedicated her life to researching the monster that possesses Elise. Garrett hopes to find a way to kill the creature without harming his daughter. But Kensington is a dangerous building. Once the carriage leaves, they're trapped inside the collapsing walls and forced to confront the horrors within. Shrouded figures stalk them. Whispers echo through the night. Unmarked graves dot the property. And the dead are not as restful as they seem...

It‘s hard to believe ghost stories can be romantic, but this one and the previous one were. When I started the first book, I thought Joseph was going to be an obstinate, mean man. That couldn‘t be farther from the truth. The problem was he was hiding the evil that resided in his house. If you like ghost stories, this book and the first book are definitely worth reading. #SeriesLove2024 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

Sophie and Joseph Argenton have survived the house of ghosts… for now. But their escape from Northwood is short-lived. The sinister shadow that haunted their ancestral home survived, and has attached itself to Joseph's young cousin. Desperate, they travel to meet her father at Kensington, a long-abandoned mansion overlooking a dead town. There's a chance that here they will find a way to kill the creature without harming the girl.

This wasn‘t as good as the first book, but still a fast, entertaining read.

For the #LittensDressedinBlood ghosthunter prompt. I'm not sure if they're hunting ghosts or running from them, but the following part of the blurb is what convinced me to read these: "Northwood's ancient halls are haunted by the family's long-dead ancestors. The malevolent spirits--produced by grisly deaths--resent her intrusion into their home."

Almost a so-so, but the awesome haunted house tipped it to a pick. This is one of those sequels that doesn‘t stand alone, and I think I liked book one just a bit more.

• [I accidentally tagged the wrong book, should be House of Salt and Sorrows!] Highmoor and the Saltaan Islands sound so magical
• yesterday was humid and 28 degrees in preparation for thunderstorms, so today is 22 and sunny!
• we went for drinks and he talked about his very sexist novel the whole time and then asked for writing advice 😬
• no kids, no pets!
• 📚🥰❤️

I very much enjoyed this duology! So far this author can do no wrong! I‘ve thoroughly enjoyed the stories she tells. Her writing style is so fluid that you have no trouble falling into the story and quickly lose track of time.

This was a good follow up to House of Shadows. I liked the story better in the first book but was still quite invested in this one. This one was a bit more predictable as well. Super fun on audio!
