19 posts | 26 read | 25 to read
Award -winning author Benjamin Percy presents an explosive and deeply layered literary thriller set in the American West. They live among us. They are our neighbors, our mothers, our lovers. They change. When government agents kick down Claire Forrester's front door and murder her parents, Claire realizes just how different she is. Patrick Gamble was nothing special until the day he got on a plane and hours later stepped off it, the only passenger left alive, a hero. Chase Williams has sworn to protect the people of the United States from the menace in their midst, but he is becoming the very thing he has promised to destroy. So far, the threat has been controlled by laws and violence and drugs. But the night of the red moon is coming, when an unrecognizable world will emerge...and the battle for humanity will begin.

I have been having a lot of issues with goodreads - books getting marked read even though they haven‘t been, when I finish a book it is marked completed multiple times - so frustrating. So in a fit of rage I deleted my account. I started a new one but I don‘t know if it is worth it to rebuild only to have this start happening again. Has anyone else had a lot of issues?

Thousand-Lives No I haven‘t! Sorry, that is so frustrating!! 5y
ljuliel No,but I haven‘t had an account in awhile. I was really into it for several years, and have gone in to set up a new account several times, but my interest quickly loses steam when I think about adding books back in, etc. Too much bother for me. I do like to go in and look up their Listopia lists from time to time, but was never in a group that I thought was fantastic. It‘s hard to get to know people well in that sort of setting. ( just my opinion 5y
Erinreadsthebooks I wish they had a DNF option like Litsy. 5y

Chrissyreadit Yes- because it is linked to Amazon now. We have kindle unlimited and whenever my son finishes a book through the kindle app it shows up on my goodreads. Very frustrating. I‘m always deleting. Also, I will often read authors notes in a book at the end and it will mark I finished a book I‘m still reading because I read the authors note. 5y
Chrissyreadit @Erinreadsthebooks I agree about the DNF option! 5y
Enchanted_Bibliophile I've been having issues with the app. So now I've switched to the online system and everything is okay if I use that only 5y
Godpants @Erinreadsthebooks I just created an extra shelf for DNF, and you can make it a permanent shelf and transfer things there. You have to set it up through the website but it‘s a game changer for sure. 5y
Crazeedi Yes, I wrote a review and it doesn't post. And if I forgot to make a copy, I have to rewrite again, it has been driving me crazy. I use goodreads to keep track of my books because it's easy, but I'm really getting fed up. I wasnt writing reviews but since I'm reading Net Galley books I like to post reviews because it helps getting approved 5y
Crazeedi @Erinreadsthebooks I did set up a DNF shelf, it helps. 5y

I have a couple that I just cannot seem to pick up so I‘m not going to. Maybe ever. It feels so good to move on from a book when it‘s not working. I guess I was in a horror mood (quelle surprise!) so werewolves it is!

Reggie Lol, those cat eyes. 5y

A political allegory with werewolves that has a lot of layers to it. It will keep me thinking for awhile. I‘m not usually a fan of werewolf or vampire stories, but this one drew me in right away. Warning: it‘s pretty gory in places!

KathyWheeler I watch werewolf movies but rarely read werewolf books. This one, however, was great! 7y

Literate and exciting fantasy novel that uses werewolves (called lycans here) to explore themes of racial prejudice, terrorism and government oppression.

Mehso-so

For me, the first 2/3 of the book were a rollicking good time filled with werewolfy political drama and adventure. Written in 2013, many parts felt prescient regarding the current political atmosphere, with werewolves serving as a metaphor for various groups.

BUT the last 1/3 fell apart for me, and strains of misogyny present throughout became more prominent. It also got grosser and more graphically violent - not surprising, but notable.

Reggie Hmmmm you make me want to read this. Lol 7y

Not even sure if it's the author or the editor I'm frustrated with now... starfish have a unique shape but can be many sizes! Corn can be white or yellow - I'm not sure what color he's saying the teeth are!
The writing isn't all like this, but why is ANY of it like this??

I don't like false etymologies!

Lobotomy:
1936, coined from lobe (in the brain sense) + medical suffix -tomy "a cutting"

Greek lobos "lobe, lap, slip; vegetable pod," used of lap- or slip-like parts of the body or plants, especially "earlobe," but also of lobes of the liver or lungs, a word of unknown origin.

starlight97 You're totally right! 7y
SkeletonKey Good catch! Phew that's bad. 7y
tournevis I *hate* when that happens... 7y

RedbagReadbooks @Lkelly you are correct. The -otomy is used to describe a medical procedure in which a patient is experiencing an operative procedure “through” something. The term -ectomy is used to describe the removal of something. The term -ostomy is to bring something from the inside out. Medical terminology was the best class I ever took for my medical career. batsy Oh dear. Fact checkers are so essential in publishing. 7y
UrsulaMonarch @Aluciddreamer Nice!!! I'm impressed! 😊🤓👌 7y
UrsulaMonarch @starlight97 @SkeletonKey @tournevis @batsy maybe I'm being too fact-based for a book that is about, you know, werewolves, but I just felt like that fictional etymology was unnecessary!! Thanks for your thoughts! 😂 7y
batsy Oh, hahaha my bad. I should have looked up the blurb, I thought this was nonfiction 😂 But you're right, still unnecessary... 7y
UrsulaMonarch @batsy 😂😂😂 i would still like to hear the author's rationale for this - a joke or wordplay on his part? Or trying to fool people? Or something else? I'm ambivalent on this book so far - parts are fun but parts rub me the wrong way! Will keep everyone posted 😉 7y
batsy I would love to know, if you find out :) It raises some questions about truth in fiction. Like if I was reading fiction and etymology popped up I would assume it was based on fact /truth. Unless I was aware I was reading a metafictional type book that played with conventions... Interesting to think about! 7y
UrsulaMonarch @batsy *completely agree!!!* 7y

If you love literary werewolf stories (and I really, really do) then this is the book for you. It's the first thing I thought of for #moon and if you like audiobooks get it now. The author reads it himself and his voice is... delicious. ❤❤❤ #uncannyoctober @RealLifeReading

When you realize the writer on your current favourite comic book also wrote a werewolf novel you really dug a few years back...

An interesting take on the werewolf story. Lycans live among us as a controversial minority group fighting against government sanctioned restrictions and control. So many parallels with current political issues - immigration, terrorism, human rights and how the quest for power and control can make it difficult to know who 'the good guys' are.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa That sounds interesting! 8y

I really wanted to like this. The first two chapters were action packed and then it was just too slow. I will put it back in my TBR pile maybe one day I'll try again

I'm struggling with this one. It is sooo big and I feel like I just keep reading and reading and I'm not making progress. It's interesting enough but there's A LOT of words and most seem unnecessary.

I read a sample of this a couple of years ago. A couple of months ago I found this hardback at a bargain bookstore and thought why not?!
