Haunting of Hill House | Shirley Jackson

Mehso-so

Ultimately it didn't turn out to be what I hoped. I loved Jackson's short story the lottery and wanted this to be just as eerie, but it fell short. At least for my modern day sensibilities it did. Perhaps it's creepier for others. It's fine to read for a look at classic horror, but I wouldn't want to revisit it. ⭐⭐⭐

Started the #audiobook for haunting of hill house for #halfbloodbingo with @jmtrivera and friends for the category a book that's been adapted for the screen. I loved the Netflix series so I wanted to read the source material. Interesting so far, but I must confess at this point in my reading, I liked the show better. Thoughts? #amreadinghorror #shirleyjackson #classichorror

I was excited by the premise, but it didn't quite achieve what it had the potential for. The story pace moved well, but things happened too fast to allow proper character development. ⭐⭐⭐

This was an audiobook re-read. This is such a fun bunch of characters and enchanting world. It's middle grade, but reads so well anyone can enjoy it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The first of my #spooktober reads. Full of twists and turns and maybe monsters, this suspenseful novel kept me turning pages late into the night. Definitely a good for fans of mystery & horror. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Love the tortall series and Tamora Pierce's writing. Such fun seeing familiar characters and how they came to be the great and powerful people they are in previous books that came later chronologically. Sweet trio of kids. Magic school. Rich fantasy world. It has all you need.

Interesting premise, but lack of character depth and frankly just a lot of prejudice running rampant. So many characters with sexism, islamaphobia, xenophobia, etc. ⭐⭐

I've only read the first two collected trades so far, but boy oh boy did I devour them. I know they're comic books, so fast and easy reads, but even still I went through them at warped speed. Gorgeous art work and bonkers storytelling. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I loved this book. The writing had a quiet simplicity that made for the beautiful tale of the son of an immigrant and his family. Just a gorgeous book. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #diversereading

I was gifted this book for my 21st birthday by a college friend and finally got around to reading it. I never watched John Stewart's show, but nowadays I do love watching comedic news series, so this really fit in my wheelhouse. It was a fun satirical read with a refresher on some basics I'd learned in school. Some of the jokes didn't land, but overall enjoyable. ⭐⭐⭐

A great and terrible beauty by libba bray was better than I anticipated. It's a boarding school ya fantasy with the ultimate depiction of frenemies. Though the beginning is a tad off-putting with the mishandled portrayal of colonialism, the book quickly picks up with a murder and a new life. What particularly drew me in is how the girls fight and befriend one another in the context of their society and what proper girls are supposed to be. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was worth the hype I'd heard about it for so many years. Amy is a psycho and I love her for it. I know she's not supposed to be likeable, but there's something about a deeply disturbed yet motivated woman that I find so satisfying. And the writing is superb. Definitely ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

This was a smart collection of essays that covers the question: what's the difference between empathy and tragedy voyeurism? The essays cover topics like sympathy for those suffering illness, even made up ones, tourism, and wounded women. Great read! #halfbloodbingo #essays #bookbingo

Every Exquisite Thing | Cassandra Clare, Maureen Johnson

This was a story in the Ghosts of the Shadow Market collection. It's part of the Shadowhunter universe, focusing on the children of the protagonists in The Infernal Devices series. In this story, Anna lightwood craves to be her full and honest self, and that self is a talented Shadowhunter, funny and mischievous queer girl. It handles the lgbtq story line so deftly in my opinion. There's a full review on my blog meagankimberly.com
