Big Bad Ironclad!: A Civil War Steamship Showdown
Big Bad Ironclad!: A Civil War Steamship Showdown | Nathan Hale
8 posts | 5 read
Each of the books in Nathan Hale s Hazardous Tales has elements of the strange but true and is presented in an engaging, funny format, highlighting the larger-than-life characters that pop up in real history. Big Bad Ironclad! covers the history of the amazing ironclad steam warships used in the Civil War.From the ship s inventor, who had a history of blowing things up and only 100 days to complete his project, to the mischievous William Cushing, who pranked his way through the whole war, this book is filled with surprisingly true facts and funny, brave characters that modern readers will easily relate to. Praise for Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales: Big Bad Ironclad"Livelier than the typical history textbook but sillier than the many outstanding works on the Civil War available for young readers, this will appeal to both history buffs and graphic-novel enthusiasts." Kirkus Reviews "Readers interested in American history will enjoy these graphic novels... Comic panels of varying sizes enhance the real-life events and support the stories over-the-top humor... the writing is accessible and entertaining; author Hale s style gives readers an insider-y, you-are-there-type scoop." Horn Book Award: New York Public Library s Children's Books 2012: 100 Books for Reading and Sharing list"

My 7 yo loves these books. Depicts the story of the invention of ironclad ships and the role they played in the civil war off the coast of Virginia. Covers war strategy, key players in the navy of the north and the south, with a focus on Cushing and Ericsson. My son was totally absorbed in it and I learned a lot too. #bbrc #middlegradegraphicnf #booked2019 #graphicnovel

So happy I got through this one too! A wonderful account of the Monitor and Merrimack and the naval battles of the Civil War. We spend so much time learning about the ground assaults that we never focus on how vital Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay were to the war effort. Lots of humor, colorful characters and, of course, research babies! 😂

Damn the broken glasses, FULL SPEED AHEAD!!! Well, I glued the arm on so I just can't fold it down but nothing was going to keep me from this Civil War story today! Incidentally, how come I don't remember learning about this wiseguy Cushing?? He's got got some set and was really daring without being super reckless!!!

After the History of Magic/Harry Potter exhibit we went downstairs to the DiMenna Children's museum (which is great btw)... they had a reading area/library set up and my 9 year old grabbed the tagged book and got comfy and read the entire graphic novel all the time saying he loves libraries and books! #proudmom #raisingreaders

Slajaunie I love hearing about young people who love to read. I sometimes think reading is becoming a lost art among young people. 6y
