Who Was Helen Keller?
Who Was Helen Keller? | Gare Thompson
9 posts | 9 read | 4 to read
At age two, Helen Keller became deaf and blind. She lived in a world of silence and darkness and she spent the rest of her life struggling to break through it. But with the help of teacher Annie Sullivan, Helen learned to read, write, and do many amazing things. This inspiring illustrated biography is perfect for young middle-grade readers. Black-and-white line drawings throughout, sidebars on related topics such as Louis Braille, a timeline, and a bibliography enhance readers' understanding of the subject. Illustrated by John O'Brien.

The “who was” books are amazing for B-IR reads. Who was Helen Keller? A great, detailed explanation book that gives great detail on Helen‘s life from beginning to end, without being too complicated for young students to read. As you read, you will learn about how/when Helen got the sickness, what methods her parents tried, the obstacles they went through, and a special person who came into Helen‘s life who will change it forever. #UCFLAE3414SP21

Spearsall continued: It then goes on to explain Helen‘s accomplishments and how she did it! A great read to inform children of who she was and that anything is possible if you put your mind to it. Great biography books. UDI 9.1 is used: Promote expectations and beliefs that optimize motivation. And ESOL strategy: Show students how to use graphic organizers, would be useful with this book to keep a timeline or cause and effect ratio. 3y
Spearsall http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/calendar-activities/helen-kell... Great website for a detailed description of the book and easily accessible and appropriate for students 3y
DrSpalding Read write think was one of the highly encouraged resources. You truly paid attention and applied your learning to this project. You are missing some English learner strategy numbers however the one you noted certainly works. Most of these books have timelines embedded in the back matter. English learner strategy 28, providing biographies is also an excellent strategy to include with all great biography books. 3y

Spearsall @DrSpalding I used the chart but I must have forgotten to put the #, my mistake 3y
DrSpalding You got the correct strategies… That is important however be sure to note the numbers because you will be using those in your lesson plans in the future. 3y

Who Was Helen Keller? is a B written by Gare Thompson. It's the story of Helen Keller who lost her eyesight and hearing very early on in her life. She struggled for a few years along with her family, unable to communicate with them effectively. Then her teacher Anne Sullivan came along and taught her sign language and how to read. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is a good story for RA or IR. https://study.com/academy/lesson/helen-keller-lesson-plan.html This source provides a lesson after reading your own pick of a Helen Keller book, where students are then able to retell the key aspects in her life. UDL Principle 1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information: This book is available in audio, ebook, and paperback which can be useful for students. 4y
Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 50. For content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, such as; strip stories, KWL activities, SQ3R, learning logs, role-playing activities, cloze strategy, etc. I think a KWL activity would be good for this lesson to see what students knew prior and what they learned from the book. 4y
Zelymarie.R I love the Who was serie! This book give the kids a great opportunity to learn about important people in a really fun way. 4y
Tabitha_H The “Who was” series are definitely great books to incorporate in the classroom. Your resource is also really great! 4y
DrSpalding The who was series is an excellent one for your classroom. Helpful resource. English learner strategy 28 works perfectly with biographies… Check it out. 4y

#lae3414sp19 The book “Who was Helen Keller?” (B) by Gare Thompson is a biography about Helen Keller‘s life, who is blind and deaf. Even though her unfortunate circumstances, she overcame impossibilities and accomplished the unthinkable considering her state. I would use this book as a LC, so that students can read the book together and discuss the life of Helen Keller. (cont. in comments)

sydneydaniels For UDLs, I would use 2.3, 9.1, and 3.2. For ESOL strategies, I would use 5 and 11. As for a lesson plan, I would have my students research Helen Keller and do a project on her, or write a paper on how the student thinks life would be like for them if they were blind or deaf. 5y
DrSpalding No resource? Proof it! An excellent book for integrating literacy and social studies. 5y
Haleysantucci This looks like a great book! I would definitely incorporate it into a social studies lesson! I like the idea of doing a project on her! Maybe the students could work in groups? That would be great for ESOL students if they were in groups, paired with helpful English speakers! 5y
caldwellalex95 @sydneydaniels When I was younger, my mom made me read this book and I couldn't stand it. Biographies were "so boring." NOW, I love it, and I realize how informative these books are! Helen Keller was a gem and this book really gives us a glimpse into her crazy world. I appreciate you rating this book a "pick," because I would have to agree! Thank you for sharing! 5y
