The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein is an MF and has won the New York Times Outstanding Book Award. Speranza's Sweater is an RF written by Marcy Pusey. It's a story of a mother telling her child why she has always kept an old plain-looking sweater. A social worker came and took the mother away from her biological parents when she was young, and she spends her life scared and confused just wanting a family who will love her. This book is also free on Kindle at the moment!#UCFLAE3414SP20

Brown Girl Dreaming | Jacqueline Woodson

Brown Girl Dreaming is an NF written by Jacqueline Woodson about her time growing up. It's the winner of the John Newbery Medal. It talks about her time growing up in the late 1960s and early 1970s in New York and South Carolina. It includes 7 poems about the struggle she faces from racism and her becoming more aware of the Civil Rights movement. I really recommend checking this out, it's very touching.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Highlight written materials for readability by enlarging the size print, by organizing chapters meaningfully, and by writing headings that show introductions or transition from one idea to another. I think this is important to highlight to students because it can be a little confusing and it may be easier for comprehension if broken down. 5y

The Pigeon Finds a Hotdog is an MF written by Mo Willems. Chris is obsessed with pigeons (he painted this beautiful picture of one) so I took the opportunity to read him this. It's about a pigeon who finds a hotdog and wants nothing more than to enjoy it. However, a curious little birdy keeps asking him questions because he's never tried one for himself. The pigeon doesn't want to give it to him so they decide to share it.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Little Critter: Just Helping My Dad is an MF written by Mercer Mayer. It's a cute and simple story of a little critter just trying to help his dad, though he's not doing a good job, but to his dad, it's the thought that counts. I always loved the Little Critter books as a kid. This is a younger grade level book but I think it would be great to use for students who aren't strong readers to create confidence in them. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 UDL Principle 6.1 Guide appropriate goal-setting: Not every student is going to be on the same page and learn in the same exact way so it's important to help students set realistic goals for themselves. ESOL Strategy 26. Maintain a library of supplementary books and workbooks written in simple English, which offer additional illustrations for problems. It's important to provide these resources for students who need to utilize it. 5y

She struggled for a few years along with her family, unable to communicate with them effectively. For content comprehension use a variety of comprehension activities, such as; strip stories, KWL activities, SQ3R, learning logs, role-playing activities, cloze strategy, etc. I think a KWL activity would be good for this lesson to see what students knew prior and what they learned from the book. 5y

Pete the Cat and the Supercool Science Fair is an SF written Kimberly and James Dean. It's about Pete and his classmates who are working on their science fair project as they become scientists. They make a volcano and face some struggles in it (like the color) but end up having an awesome project and win a prize. The book even came with stickers that he let me stick on his head after reading the book (he's a great sport.) #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 41. Have students compile notebooks of their hypothesis, materials, procedures, data, conclusions of experiments, and field experiences. Focusing on the aspects of the book that discuss these things to show students these are important steps in experiments. 5y

The Most Magnificent Thing is an SF written by Ashley Spires. It's a cute story about a girl who has this idea to make the most magnificent thing with her dog (and sidekick) but she faces a lot of difficulties getting it just right. She gets frustrated halfway through and gives up, but then gives it another shot. Rachel loved this book, specifically for the dog and the illustrations of him. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 UDL Principle 8.2 Vary demands and resources to optimize challenge: Again, this book is about overcoming a struggle and not giving up, which is a great message for students. So making this clear to students that there will be challenges they face but to persevere is important. 5y

It encourages thinking of what their “magnificent thing“ would be while also giving them the encouragement not to give up if it doesn't turn out right the first time. 5y

Where the Sidewalk Ends is a P written by Shel Silverstein and has won numerous awards including the Outstanding Book Award. In article 7 it mentions the benefits of reading a poem a day and with 123 poems included, the book makes it simple to do so. I picked HUG O' WAR to read to my boyfriend and his roommate, they invested in nerf guns and have been shooting each other non-stop. The poems main message is not to fight but to love.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 I should mention I made them hug for the picture but they are still using the nerf guns.
I think CR is useful for this book, and with poetry in general because it teaches students the techniques to build their fluency and confidence. https://www.learningtogive.org/units/philanthropic-behavior/hug-o-war is a good resource because it involves not just reading the poem but an activity to brainstorm and problem-solve together.

Agavitt1 UDL Principle 6.2 Support planning and strategy development: Not only is it important to develop a student's understanding of poetry, but it's important to make connections for a deeper understanding. For example, in the poem Hug O' War the message is to love instead of fight, but having students work together for collaboration and solving a problem presented to them creates even more development. 5y

Reading poetry every day to students creates a predictable classroom routine, and having an outline of what was read, or what is going to be read is useful to students. 5y

Butterflies on the First Day of School by Annie Silvestro and illustrated by Dream Chen is an MF. It's about a girl who's starting kindergarten and even though she's excited, the closer it comes the more nervous she gets. Her mother tries to reassure her by telling her it's butterflies, which Rosie takes literally. Every time she talks or does activities with her classmates, butterflies come out of her mouth and she feels better.#UCFLAE3414SP20

Goodnight Moon is an MF written by Margaret Wise Brown and illustrated by Clement Hurd. It's a cute bedtime story from the perspective of a mother rabbit tucking the little rabbit into bed, saying goodnight to everything around them. I've always loved this book, it's simple but it is a really soothing book to read, in my opinion. #UCFLAE3414SP20

One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia is an HF and has won the John Newbery Medal as well as the Coretta Scott King Award for Authors. I read this book on Kindle and enjoyed it. It's a story of three young girls from New York going to visit their mother in California, whom they haven't seen or spoken to in years all while the Black Panther Movement is going on. #UCFLAE3414SP20

This source provides a lot of great ideas to use in the classroom for this book. It also provides informal sources like news articles during the Black Panther Movement, which students who read this may not be familiar with. 5y

Activate prior knowledge to those who are, and supplying background knowledge to those who are not. ESOL strategy 42. Have students use timelines to arrange and sequence important facts and information: This is useful for historical type of books for students to better understand the timeline. 5y

Wonder is an RF written by R.J. Palacio. It's the winner of Vermont's Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award along with a handful of others. It's about a child who has been homeschooled and is now starting at a real school. He was born with a facial difference and everyone is either afraid, makes fun of him, or avoids him altogether. I LOVED this book. I didn't want to put it down and ended up finishing it in 5 hours. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is a good book for IR but I also think it would be great to utilize it as an RA. I know I didn't want to put it down to find out what happened next, so I think leaving students on these “cliff hangers“ would keep them engaged. https://wonderthebook.com/for-teachers is a great source that provides a lot of lessons to do with the book, and also importantly, talks about ways to have a kind classroom. 5y
Agavitt1 UDL Principle 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity: This book heavily focuses on being kind. It is common knowledge for most students to know that they should be kind, but oftentimes they can be ignorant (like some of the kids in the story) so this is a great way to show students how being mean makes other people feel, and more importantly how being kind can make someone so happy. 5y

The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs is a TL story written by Jon Scieszka. It's won the award of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book. It tells the tale of the 3 Little Pigs from the perspective of the wolf in a witty and humorous way. The wolf is basically telling his story from inside of the jail, and he was just trying to get sugar to make his grandmother a cake. I enjoyed the illustrations in this book, done by Lane Smith. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 UDL Principle 1.1 Offer ways of customizing the display of information: The story shows a different perspective of a very well known story that always seems to paint the wolf in a bad light (granted he did eat the 2 pigs even in this story.) However, this shows students that not everything is black and white, and there is always two sides to every story. 5y
Agavitt1 ESOL strategy 4. Link lesson topic to students' prior knowledge. The Three Little Pigs is a well-known story that students will most likely know (if not reading the original before this would still be a good idea) and they can build off of this. 5y

The Day the Crayons Quit is MF by Drew Daywalt. Duncan comes home and sees his crayons wrote to him, each complaining about their treatment. The story ends with Duncan wanting them to be happy, so he colors a picture. Looking closely at it, he used the crayons just how they asked in the letters. After we read this in class, I told my boyfriend about how funny it was so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to read it to him. #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This is good for RA but I think it would be fun to use as RT as well, especially with higher grade levels so students can have a lot of fun with it, and engage in some sassy crayon behavior. https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/day-crayons-quit is a resource with a lot of different activities to use for this book.

ESOL strategy 6. Continually monitor students‘ comprehension: All students should be able to enjoy a fun story. Speaking clearly and slow enough allowing time for comprehension.

Creepy Carrots is MF written by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Peter Brown and has earned a Caldecott Medal. The story follows a young rabbit named Jasper. He loves carrots and in a certain field, helps himself to as many as he wants. Soon, these carrots begin “following“ him. The story ends with him trapping all the carrots in the field, which was their plan all along so he wouldn't eat them anymore! .#UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 ESOL Strategy 20. List the most important words and phrases you use or plan to use in a presentation on a transparency or on the chalkboard. When coming across vocabulary students could potentially find challenging, writing them out along with a visual aid on the board for ESOL students can help them better understand the story. 5y

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is a classic MF and Christopher award winner. My child, Kevin (pictured above), absolutely loved it as you can tell from his smile. The story is about a beautiful fish and his beautiful scales. He learns that his appearance isn't everything and isn't true happiness. He ends up sharing his rainbow scales with all the other fish, and though he isn't the most beautiful anymore, he did find happiness. #UCFLAE3414SP20

The UDL principle 5.2 Use multiple tools for construction and composition: In the lesson plan above, the Rainbow Fish video is used. Showing this to students even prior or after reading is using multiple tools for students to really comprehend the reading.

LeahH I also did “The Rainbow Fish.” This was always one of my favorite books growing up! I loved the shinny scales in the book! I like how this book talks about sharing and making friends! This relates to the Palacio-kindness video we watched a Barnes and Noble! 5y

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom | Bill Martin, Jr.

I vividly remember this cover from my childhood but I couldn't remember what the book was about, until reading the MF Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault. It's about the letters of the alphabet climbing up a tree. I think this is a great read for when teaching students the alphabet. It would be fun while reading to have students join in what letter comes next! (The cover matched my pen!) #UCFLAE3414SP20

Agavitt1 This book works best for RA, again, it's just a fun way to engage students when learning the alphabet. http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/chicka-chicka-boom-boom provides a week long lesson plan to go with the story, with a lot of fun activities in it.
The UDL principle 1.3 Offer alternatives for visual information: It offers students another visual of the alphabet so they can see all the letters and while reading can recognize the letters named.

Agavitt1 ESOL strategy 4. Link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge. For example, using the lesson plan linked above, I would provide ESOL students with enough time to activate any prior knowledge they have about certain letters while pulling them out of the sand bucket. 5y
DrSpalding I am guessing you thoroughly enjoyed Ryan‘s storytelling of this book. It is perfect for storytelling and also reading aloud as you noted. This book can be used as a review of the letters of the alphabet. Great idea to pull them from a sand bucket. 5y

First Day Jitters is RF by Julie Danneberg and illustrated by Judy Love is an adorable and funny story. It starts with Sarah being woken up for her first day of school and being nervous. The reader thinks she's a student but she is actually the teacher in the end. This story shows students teachers can be nervous on the first day and they're not alone. I read this to my roommates and they thought the ending was so funny and cute. #UCFLAE3414SP20
