Bailedbailed

This book was unfortunately very underwhelming for me. I decided to bail. Just couldn‘t bring myself to finish it.

I finished this audiobook a while ago, but neglected to post a review. Oops! I wasn‘t particularly drawn to the main character, Rebekah Roberts, but the story was interesting enough to finish. I especially enjoyed a glimpse into a Hasidic neighbourhood in New York, and I think the author did a pretty thorough job in her research and portrayal of the community. The interview with the author at the end of the audiobook was enlightening. 3/5⭐️

UwannaPublishme Love the book cover! My Mom‘s from Brooklyn, so I‘ve been on that bridge a few times. 5y
PurpleyPumpkin @UwannaPublishme It‘s such an iconic bridge. I‘ve been to NYC a couple of times, but never been on the bridge. Hoping to go back someday. 😉 5y

Great crime novel. Hard to put down. Very good on audio. It‘s told from the point of view of a journalist, which gave it an interesting spin.

Andrew65 It looks good, covers really switch me onto or off a book! A great time! 🙌 5y

JacqMac @Andrew65 I tend to judge a book by its cover, too. 5y

Compelling crime fiction: young reporter looks for secrets in a closed New York community.

I love mysteries, but not usually from the pov of a journalist (harassing people to get a story). That being said, this was a good mystery that Rebekah solved all by herself - mainly because it was not being pursued by the police - while encountering clues from her own past. I love reading books that take a peek inside the Hasidic Jewish community, and for that this book did not disappoint. It gave me that peek, a good mystery, and a short read.

This is my first adult mystery/thriller since Gone Girl and I enjoyed it! Not as intense as others I‘ve read but the plot was tight and moved quickly enough for me to plow through the whole book this afternoon. Thanks @Rachel.Rencher for sending this my a few months ago! :)

Rachel.Rencher Yay, glad you enjoyed it! 😁❤ 6y

Entertaining and engaging crime novel about a murder that occurs within a Hasidic community in New York. As a journalist with some baggage related to the Jewish community, the main character inevitably gets too involved. Occasionally slow but still interesting. 3/5 ⭐️

I love a good journalist mystery - and I'm fascinated by ultra-Orthodox communities. This book was a solid win!

This was a surprisingly good story that kept me guessing until the end. The book description didn't grab me right away but I was hooked within first few pages!

I think the crime/mystery/thriller genre might just not be for me, especially when it comes to communities I care about. I wanted more nuance, more character development, but we have a plot to get through. At least Dahl did some research. And as iffy as I was on the Judaism, I found myself grappling with the journalism. Was my first grad school degree, once upon a time, and although I didn't do tabloids, a lot of the issues are familiar to me.
