Poor People
Poor People | Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky
7 posts | 24 read | 13 to read
As both a masterpiece of Russian populist writing and a parody of the entire genre, "Poor People" is an early example of Dostoevsky's genius. Written as a series of letters, "Poor People" tells the tragic tale of a petty clerk and his impossible love for a young girl. Longing to help her and her family, he sells everything he can, but his kindness leads him only into more desperate poverty, and ultimately into debauchery. As a typical "man of the underground," he serves as the embodiment of the belief that happiness can only be achieved with riches.

Poor People | Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky

i‘ve always appreciated the detailed studies of poverty in dostoyevsky‘s stories. i especially love when a character has nothing but is still grateful for his health or family or just being able to feel the breeze or see a beautiful woman. just finished poor people and have no idea what to read next!

Pickpick

This was the 1st book written (in epistolary style) by #Dostoevsky (age 24), yet it has the same complexity as his later works. It‘s a story of love, despair, poverty social economy and books as told thru the correspondence between Makar and Barbara. I recommend it for FD fans. For those who have not read his work start with Crime & Punishment. This will need a reread. Does any one have a fave FD book they recommend? Brother Karamazov is mine.

Pickpick

This was Dostoyevsky‘s first book, & consists of letters between 2 distant relatives living in St. Petersburg. Their poverty and misery grind them down, but through their struggles they still find beauty.

There are vivid scenes, unreliable narratives, and plenty of co-dependent behaviour, which take this book beyond an exercise in misery and into providing surprising moments of humour, confusion, and depth.

Thanks again, @SerialReader !

ClairesReads Love Dostoyevsky but I haven‘t read this one- I‘ll line it up on serial reader next time I need to start something 7y
Libby1 Excellent, @ClairesReads . My favourite Dostoyevsky book is still Crime and Punishment. 7y

Good heavens.

What a convoluted chain of acquaintances.

“...her sister-in-law is acquainted with a laundress who has a cousin who has a nephew who...”

Libby1 @Kappadeemom , @cathysaid , @LauraBeth - I was thinking they were all from Ireland! Except then they‘d all be related. 😃 7y

I was at my friend‘s house this morning and decided to catch up on Poor Folk on #SerialReader while she was putting her baby down for a nap.

But how can I read about misery in 19th century St. Petersburg when this wee darlin‘ has plonked herself down on me?

Is it really very wrong that I‘m paying much more attention to my friend‘s cat than to her baby? 🤷🏼‍♀️

So I had the best of all worlds: some reading, a cat on my lap, and a cuppa. 😻

xicanti Hey, the baby's sleeping and the cat's RIGHT THERE, being cute. 7y
Libby1 @MinDea , @kspenmoll , @CoffeeCatsBooks , @OrangeMooseReads , @CaitlinR , @Johanna414 , @xicanti - AGREED. I babies her for more than an hour. It‘s hard to try to be polite and pay attention to other humans when there‘s a cat nearby. 7y
Purrfectpages I pay more attention to animals all the time 😆 7y
