Blade of Light: An Inspector Montalbano Novel 19
Blade of Light: An Inspector Montalbano Novel 19 | Andrea Camilleri
6 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
Blade of Light is the nineteenth gripping addition to the phenomenally successful Inspector Montalbano mysteries by Andrea Camilleri. For a brief moment, as Montalbano was looking, a bright blade of light flashed from the loft and shone straight in his eyes. Despite the sunglasses, he instinctively shut his eyes and when he reopened them the light was gone . . . When a gentleman arrives at Montalbano's station to report an armed robbery on his wife that ended with a kiss, the inspector's suspicions are aroused. As he delves deeper into the case, Montalbano finds that none of the witnesses' stories are adding up, and he can't help but feel that they're not meant to. When a body turns up showing all the signs of a mafia hit, the inspector knows he must excavate the truth from what he is being led to believe. Meanwhile there's a case that keeps winding its way back to Montalbano's office. A locked door has suddenly appeared on a farmer's disused shed, and then, just as quickly, the door disappears. The anti-terrorist police soon intervene, but why are they so keen to keep this away from the inspector? And why does he sense that this case is connected to him somehow? With deceit at every turn and a distraction of the heart taking over his head, Inspector Montalbano must focus if he is ever going to solve this mystery. PRAISE FOR THE SERIES "A magnificent series of novels" Sunday Times "There's a deliciously playful quality to the mysteries Andrea Camilleri writes about a lusty Sicilian police detective named Salvo Montalbano." New York Times Book Review "Camilleri as crafty and charming a writer as his protagonist is an investigator." The Washington Post "The books are full of sharp, precise characterizations and with subplots that make Montalbano endearingly human ... Like the antipasti that Montalbano contentedly consumes, the stories are light and easily consumed, leaving one eager for the next course." New York Journal of Books "This series is distinguished by Camilleri's remarkable feel for tragicomedy, expertly mixing light and dark in the course of producing novels that are both comforting and disturbing." Oh my. My heart is breaking right now. I almost thought Camilleri lost his touch a bit till I got to the end of the book. But no, his reputation remains unsullied. I love this series.

This book in the Montalbano Series seemed familiar to a previous one, and wondered if they were being too formulaic. It wasn‘t until I was 90% into the book and checked that I found out I read it in 2017! I wonder how I managed to read this one out of order! 😗 That said it was a very good story as all the books in this series tend to be, and they are translated well. I thoroughly recommend this series.

Intriguing mysteries for Inspector Montalbano and some melancholy in his personal life. I know it's late, but I can't resist nominating Prosecutor Tommaseo as #JustACreep. His behaviour in relation to young women who are the victims of (often violent) crime is quite revolting. Obviously, the Inspector despises him. #NoFemmeber

CarolynM @thegreensofa It's Field Black on High St in Northcote. It's nice, but my favourites are Kau and Short Round in Thornbury. 6y
CarolynM @Cinfhen Glad you like the photo. 🙂 I knew I'd come across some creeps in my reading but I couldn't think of any for the prompt the other day. When I started reading this book I remembered. 6y

Billypar Agreed with everyone- gorgeous spot! Though hopefully the parts with the creep you described were few enough so as not to spoil the peace of the surroundings 😁 6y

#thefinalcountdown This brings back happy memories - the song hit the charts in my 1st year of college and reminds me of first meeting my wife & the early days of the relationship. Happy memories & 30 years on she is still my best & most endearing friend & my soul mate. In relation to the photo challenge I looked at it slightly differently, Europe were the group & this brings first & foremost one of my favourite European Detectives...Montalbano!

Finished my fourth and final complete book during the #springcleaningreadathon. This was a very interesting book in the Montalbano Series, with quite a few things going on in his personal life.

#springcleaningreadathon Thought I'd go for some light relief and a visit to Italy with Inspector Montalbano on a Saturday evening. This is my physical book reading. If anyone hasn't read this series I thoroughly recommend it and it translates well.
