Love Lies Bleeding
Love Lies Bleeding | Edmund Crispin
6 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
A VINTAGE MURDER MYSTERY As inventive as Agatha Christie, as hilarious as P.G. Wodehouse discover the delightful detective stories of Edmund Crispin. Crime fiction at its quirkiest and best. Castrevenford school is preparing for Speech Day and English professor and amateur sleuth Gervase Fen is called upon to present the prizes. However, the night before the big day, strange events take place that leave two members of staff dead. The Headmaster turns to Professor Fen to investigate the murders. While disentangling the facts of the case, Mr Fen is forced to deal with student love affairs, a kidnapping and a lost Shakespearean manuscript. By turns hilarious and chilling, Love Lies Bleeding is a classic of the detective genre. Erudite, eccentric and entirely delightful Before Morse, Oxfords murders were solved by Gervase Fen, the most unpredictable detective in classic crime fiction.

Not as brilliant as The Moving Toyshop, but still a satisfying example of Crispin's wit and literary verve. Would be greatly enjoyed by fans of Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair.

CarolynM I love Gervase Fen. 4y

Our local library shut down for good last month, planned demolition and then a two year waiting period before new construction will be complete. In the meantime, they started a temp location, it's not yet open due to covid, BUT the friends of the lib store has moved into another, larger location, and OPENED TODAY!!!! My #bookhaul for this visit includes 8 golden age mysteries, a Sherman Alexie novel, and a book about the history of bookshelves. ❤️

Liked this a lot. Murder mysteries in schools are my jam. And this is a really good example of one. Old fashioned but good.

Verity @CarolynM I‘ve only read three of them, but I think I might too! 5y

#5thbookinaseries

The Emma manga series was my fav awhile back and I collected most of them. Love Lies Bleeding is the 5th in Gervase Fen series and the whole series is brilliant and funny. The Susan Cooper is the Dark is Rising series, the Alan Bradley is the lovely Flavia de Luce series, and then there's Anne. 💜
