A Lesson in Dying
A Lesson in Dying | Ann Cleeves
3 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
Who hanged the headmaster in the playground on the night of the school Hallowe'en Party? Almost everyone in Heppleburn either hated or feared the viper-tongued Harold Medburn. Inspector Ramsay is convinced it was the headmaster's enigmatic wife but Jack Robson, school governor and caretaker, is determined to prove her innocence. With the help of his restless enthusiastic daughter, Patty, Jack digs into the secrets of Heppleburn, and uncovers a cesspit - of lies, adultery, blackmail and madness.

First book in an older series by Ann Cleeves, the Inspector Ramsay Series. This was written in 1990 and was much shorter than her more modern series.
You could certainly see the talent developing in these books and it was an enjoyable read.

First published 1990, now reissued with fancy new cover, bought in kindle sale. Police procedural set in a NE town that felt a bit ploddy and dated.
Think I'll stick to her new ones!

myellenbee I haven't heard of that one. But speaking of new Ann Cleeves books, today at the library I got "The Long Call" the first of a new series. I'm very excited to read it. 5y
charl08 I am 55 in the queue for it! 5y
myellenbee Wow, I guess I lucked out! It was just on the new large print book shelf. Which I'm finding sadly much easier to read these day. 5y
charl08 @myellenbee love it when that happens! 5y

Wow, that was a fast read! The first book in a series, introducing Inspector Ramsey. Everything happened fast in this book and it felt like it was over before it started. The headmaster is murdered, and it turns out no one really liked him. But, who murdered him? I will continue with the series hoping that the series will get better and the characters having more depth. 3+ stars.
