The Inheritance of Exile
The Inheritance of Exile: Stories from South Philly | Susan Muaddi Darraj
6 posts | 2 read | 10 to read
In The Inheritance of Exile, Susan Muaddi Darraj expertly weaves a tapestry of the events and struggles in the lives of four Arab-American women. Hanan, Nadia, Reema, and Aliyah search for a meaningful sense of home, caught in the cultural gap that exists between the Middle East and the United States. /// Daughters of Palestinian immigrants who have settled into the diverse southern section of Philadelphia, the four friends live among Vietnamese, Italians, Irish, and other ethnic groups. Each struggles to reconcile her Arab identity with her American one. Muaddi Darraj adds the perspectives of the girls mothers, presented in separate stories, which illuminate the often troubled relationship between first and second generations of immigrants. /// Her suite of finely detailed portraits of arresting characters, told in evocative, vivid language, is sure to intrigue those seeking enjoyment and insight.

Fantastic interconnected short story collection about the lives of four Arab-American women living in South Philly. Told in four sections (3 stories each) centering on each woman with one of the stories from the perspectives of that charater's mother. 5⭐

Reggie Is it like an Arab Joy Luck Club? 5y
mreads @Reggie That was mentioned in several reviews but I never read Joy Luck Club, another for my TBR 😄. 5y
BooknerdsLife @Reggie @mreads awww interesting! Joy Luck Club was one of my favourite books! Stacked it on my never ending TBR pile 🙌🏼📚🤗 5y

If you know anything about South Philly, you know rumors and neighborhood gossip are the predominant languages spoken here. 😉

mreads I just got this from the library, have you read it? 6y
Mdargusch Ooh. Sounds intriguing. 6y
MicheleinPhilly @mreads I have not. This is one of those books that has been on my radar for ages but I always seem to forget about when I‘m book shopping. 6y

Cinfhen Nice one!!!! 6y
MicheleinPhilly @Mdargusch I‘ve seen nothing but raves for it! 6y
Reviewsbylola Sounds about right. 6y
MicheleinPhilly @Reviewsbylola Sometimes it is frightening to realize how closely some of these old biddies are paying attention to inconsequential happenings. You don‘t even have to TELL them what‘s up, they already know because they‘re on neighborhood watch. 6y
Mdargusch 😂 I love that - neighborhood watch! 6y
Reviewsbylola I like to think I‘m on neighborhood watch as well. 😆😆 #nosyneighbor 6y
MicheleinPhilly @Mdargusch @Reviewsbylola Our next door neighbor will call at all hours of the day to tell us about some mundane “development” like someone locked their bike to the telephone pole in front of our house. I‘m not entirely sure what she expects me to do with the information. 6y
Reviewsbylola Hahahaha that‘s the kind of stuff I would tell my husband, so I guess I don‘t take it too far. 6y
Mdargusch So funny! I want to live in your neighborhood! 6y
emilyhaldi Fun! 6y
gradcat Very amusing! If you know the Deep South, we speak the same language (very fluent)! However, I think I fall into the “old biddy” category, and I can assure you that I‘m more talked about than the one doing the talking—and the ones talking about me are 20 to 40 years my juniors! 😱 (edited) 6y

Geez, as if I could possibly do justice to the sheer power in Queen Latifah‘s U.N.I.T.Y.! 🔥 But the idea of #unity brought this book to mind. It‘s about four Palestinian women and their American-born daughters. The author weaves together some powerful themes—namely, unity in the face of conflict—through connections of family & friendships and the richness & complexity of ordinary life.

batsy I haven't heard of this. It sounds lovely! 7y
batsy Oh wait... I seem to have already stacked it 😳 7y

saresmoore @batsy Ahaha! Yes! Shawn and I both coincidentally chose it for a photo challenge once upon a time. I have some things I‘m compiling to send to you (eventually 😬). I‘ll add this to the stack! 7y
saresmoore @batsy Hang on, what time is it for you?! Past my bedtime, for sure. 😴 7y
batsy That is so sweet of you! Are you sure? ❤️ (It's half past midnight, which is probably why I'm trying to stack already stacked books 😂) 7y
saresmoore @batsy Hahaha! I‘m happy to do it! The only trouble is managing to get everything boxed and sent. 7y
Eggs Love this pic w the tulips 🌷 7y
Cinfhen Pretty photo...if I remember correctly these women live in philly, right?!? Sounds fascinating 7y
saresmoore @Eggs Thanks! I love tulips. 7y
saresmoore @Cinfhen They do! It‘s similar in structure to The Joy Luck Club, but I enjoyed it much more. 7y
Cinfhen Oh, duh!!! It‘s written on the cover of the book..... 7y
saresmoore @Cinfhen You mean the tiny slightly blurred script?? Ha! I have such trouble reading the fine print in Litsy photos. 7y
Cinfhen Oh good, it's not just me 7y

merelybookish It means you score a better spot. And some reading time! 7y
saresmoore @Cinfhen It was! Ellie declared, "I love school!" Then she sang me the song she learned and then came home and read five books aloud to me. It makes my heart so full! As far as the book goes, I only got through the first chapter, but so far I think it has good potential. 7y
saresmoore @AmandaL 👯 Fun! What's the book? 7y
saresmoore @merelybookish So true! The only bummer is that it's 93 degrees in the shade today, so I was sweating rather profusely by the time the kids were released. 7y
AmandaL It's an interesting listen. 7y
saresmoore @AmandaL I've heard good things about that one! 7y
LauraBeth Yes! Yes you are! 7y

I don't think I've ever read a book about or set in Philadelphia; an Internet search just now brought this one to my attention and I'd sure be interested in giving it a try! A novel about a group of second-generation Palestinian-Americans in South Philly.

(Ha! I see @saresmoore has also found out about this book in the same way earlier today! 😍)

saresmoore I love it! I ordered a copy, so I'll let you know what I think of it. 8y

MicheleinPhilly I've never heard of it but now I must read it. I live in South Philly! 8y
Cinfhen Wow! So fascinating, I always thought South Philly was mostly Italian families! 8y
saresmoore @MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen I just ordered a copy via AbeBooks. It really does sound interesting! 8y

Cinfhen You'll have to let us know! 8y
MicheleinPhilly @Cinfhen @saresmoore Italians are still a big presence but the area has become much more diverse in recent years. The neighborhood that we live in is more diverse than where we lived in Center City. 8y
Cinfhen I really didn't know that @MicheleinPhilly that's incredible 8y
saresmoore @MicheleinPhilly That is really cool! Philly seems like a neat city. 8y
LeahBergen This looks good! 👍🏼 8y
LauraBeth @saresmoore - this looks great - stop making my TBR grow! @MicheleinPhilly Do I need a passport for Philly? Because I need to replace my Gone Girl picture... 8y
MicheleinPhilly @LauraBeth Bad passport photos are required to gain entrance. Can you please come up here this summer when @Cinfhen will be here? I'll buy you a present. 8y
Cinfhen I'll go halfies with you on the gift for @LauraBeth @MicheleinPhilly ! 8y
LauraBeth Oh y'all know I'd be there in a New York minute @MicheleinPhilly and @Cinfhen if it weren't for all the sad stuff going on right now. I'll still take the present though 😂😂 8y
shawnmooney Ha! I just found out about this myself online and posted a blurb about it because of #PhiladelphiaFreedom - and see you beat me to it by about five hours! Great minds think alike, hey? 💖 8y
