Depends What You Mean by Extremist
Depends What You Mean by Extremist: Going Rogue with Australian Deplorables | John Safran
14 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
No one turns up where they're not wanted quite like John Safran. In this hilarious and disorienting adventure he gets among our diverse community of white nationalists, ISIS supporters, anarchists and more, digging away at the contradictions that many would prefer be left unexamined. Who is this black puppet-master among the white nationalists? And this Muslim fundamentalist who geeks out on Monty Python? Is there a secret radicalisation network operating in John's own Jewish suburb? And ultimately - is hanging with all these radicals washing off on John himself? Populated by an extraordinary cast of 'ordinary' Australians, Depends What You Mean by Extremist is a startling, confronting portrait of contemporary Australia. We all think we know what's going on in our own country, but this larger-than-life, timely, and alarmingly insightful true story will make you think again . . . Drinking shots with nationalists and gobbling falafel with radicals, John Safran was there the year the extreme became the mainstream.

John Safran is an Australian Gonzo journalist in the style of Jon Ronson, a conflicted questioner of the stranger part of our cultures. In this case he focusses on the rise of extremism in Australia by going and meeting with them; be they Islamic, Anti-Islamic, Jewish, White Supremacists, is left more conflicted and confused than when he started. Yet he also skilfully and humorously highlights the hypocrisy in their positions and actions.

I‘ve enjoyed John Safran‘s work through this whole career: from TV, to radio, to literature, and have been looking forward to starting this book for a while.

It‘s a lazy term but he‘s made a career out of “gonzo” journalism & clearly has an affinity with true crime as well as social issues.

Time to get stuck into a side of Australia few outsiders see.

Finally home and jet lagged. Just finished this in record time for book club tonight. One advantage of my jet lag is that I get in a lot of reading when I should be asleep. This book gave me lots of food for thought. I really don't know JOHN Safran so I'm going to Google him . Have a read -- especially Aussies-- though I'm sure most people will find it gets them thinking. @MrsMalaprop -- see you tonight! 😍📚

Sue I still haven't got around to reading this one yet, but I love John Safran. Have a look on YouTube for John Safran Race Around the World and I promise you won't be sorry. 7y
MrsMalaprop Yay! Well done Joy. Yes, you have to google him. He has done a lot of fascinating, provocative stuff for tv. In addition to @Sue 's recommendation, I suggest you take a look at John Safran Vs God. It's very 'out there' though. Talk more tonight 👏👏. 7y

John Safran gets up close and personal with Australian extremists of all persuasions. It's kind of what he's known for. And they tell him stuff! Which he then uses against them.

He unearths contradictions and hypocrisy, whilst providing insights into the rise (and fall) of far right groups here.

And he does it all with his characteristic humour. There were so many LOL moments.

❤️❤️❤️ his work 👍.

MrsMalaprop @8little_paws That book is called Murder in Mississippi here in Australia. I loved it too. Saw him speak about it & got my copy signed by him 😍😍😍. 7y

😍😍😍 Chose this for book club this month (2017 is our club's 20th Anniversary).

I Facebook messaged the author, who is a fairly well known Australian provocateur, inviting him to attend our meeting 🤣.

And got this response!!

(I'm choosing to ignore the spelling error 😊).

Jeg Bet the error was his spell check thingy. Does that to me all the time. What a thrill to hear from him. Can't wait to read it. It's waiting at home for me. @MrsMalaprop 7y

@Jeg This month's book club pick! You might not find it too easily in bonny Scotland. Perhaps it can await your return? x

Cinfhen Sounds good! Nice choice, book club😊 8y
Jeg Yes you are right about it not being here. I've already organised to read Michelle's. 😊📚 . Also going to read the one you just discussed. Sounds very interesting. @MrsMalaprop . I think I'm home in time to read it before next book club. Off to Iceland on Sunday for a week. 8y
Jeg Just thinking @MrsMalaprop that books for book club so far have been non fiction or fiction based on fact. 8y
MrsMalaprop I was deciding between two fiction and two non fiction reads. The two fiction were too long for some (Pachinko & A Fine Balance) & Veronica didn't want to read Gut 😜. We did observe that it was yet another non fiction book, although The Museum of Modern Love is really a novel. Enjoy Iceland ❄️☃️📚 @Jeg . 8y

Sue @BestOfFates I'm not sure what their release dates would be in the US. You'll be able to find them at the Book Depository though (free shipping!) 8y
Sue @Joanne1 Yes! I've loved his stuff since then. They don't make telly like that anymore! 8y
BestOfFates @Sue Fighting Hislam isn't even there! Crazy, right? It's my only source for foreign books, so guess I'll have to wait and hope it comes here :( 8y
Sue @BestOfFates That is crazy! They must have either only done s tiny print run, or not ordered many. (edited) 8y
MrsMalaprop Have you read his previous book, Murder in Mississippi? It's really good. 8y
