Notes from a Dead House
Notes from a Dead House | Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Richard Pevear, Larissa Volokhonsky, Fyodor M Dostoevsky
In 1849, Dostoevsky was sentenced to four years at hard labor in a Siberian prison camp for participating in a socialist discussion group. The novel he wrote after his release, based on notes he smuggled out, not only brought him fame, but also founded the tradition of Russian prison writing." Notes from a Dead House"(sometimes translated as"The House of the Dead") depicts brutal punishments, feuds, betrayals, and the psychological effects of confinement, but it also reveals the moments of comedy and acts of kindness that Dostoevsky witnessed among his fellow prisoners. To get past government censors, Dostoevsky made his narrator a common-law criminal rather than a political prisoner, but the perspective is unmistakably his own. His incarceration was a transformative experience that nourished all his later works, particularly"Crime and Punishment." Dostoevsky s narrator discovers that even among the most debased criminals there are strong and beautiful souls. His story is, finally, a profound meditation on freedom: The prisoner himself knows that he is a prisoner; but no brands, no fetters will make him forget that he is a human being. "

April .leave it to me to pick a novel from 1862 .😂this semi autobiographical novel was where Dostoevsky cut his chops on developing characters & worked on the psychological elements of his novels .So not plot driven.I felt I was there .😱I adore this cover of this old Grove Press Evergreen edition that has lived in my collection for years. #12Booksof2022

batsy Yay for Dosty! Brilliant author. I've yet to read this, though. That edition 👌🏾 1y

You can tell early on that Dostoevsky is sharpening his tools of description for the more psychological work to come.A reprieve from the firing squad sent him to prison in Siberia .His eyes were opened to all different types of people, many types of trauma. This is a Constance Garnett translation.I have heard some contemporary translations are better, this copy has been in my collection for years , I adore the cover so decided to read this version.

Leftcoastzen It was my #bookspin for March ! @TheAromaofBooks 2y

This is my favorite read so far this year. I read poor Dover Thrift translations of The Gambler and The Double in high school; these low quality translations made me think Dostoyevsky was my least favorite Russian author. Well, 20 years and a stellar translation later, I‘m ready to change my opinion. Dostoyevsky is an absolute humanist revelation in this lightly fictionalized account of his time in a Siberian labor prison. He‘s my new dead BF 🖤

The Mother's Birthiversary celebration has come to a close, but we ended up with a pretty great selection of souvenirs. Some were Bryan's picks, most were mine. Some were used, some were given, and a couple were ordered in advance. But most importantly, all of them are BOOKS! Yay!

I-read-and-eat I love this picture 😍 7y
saresmoore @I-read-and-eat Books are the best décor, aren't they? 7y

saresmoore @Moray_Reads Yes! My husband found those online! I have a borderline unhealthy obsession with Moone Boy...and Chris O'Dowd. 7y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore So funny. It's fantastic. And I'll pretty much watch anything Chris O'Dowd does 7y
andrew61 I love seeing people's bookshelves. I also agree about Chris o'dowd, did you see the irish film where a priest is told he is going to be killed in which C was brilliant, and the bbc2 series where he was tracing relatives (was it a Christopher guest series?) which i hoped wd get another series. Anyway great photo sara. 7y
saresmoore @andrew61 Ah! Undiscovered Chris O'Dowd! I'll have to search for those. Thank you! 7y
andrew61 @saresmoore I've just looked on imdb- the film was called Calvary, and the tv series was Family Tree, i wouldn't mind but Alison and I saw the film at the cinema but i couldn't remember the name. 7y
Hobbinol Gosh you really did have a conglomeration of holidays! I usually end up celebrating Birthmas Year... Glad you got such a great stash and happy everything! 7y
LeahBergen I Capture the Castle came! Isn't it pretty? 7y
saresmoore @Hobbinol Thank you! It's a lot at once, but it's nicely spaced from Christmas and my kids' birthdays, so I've usually managed to scrounge together some spare book money by the time it comes around each year. 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen Good eye! It is lovely and the condition is near pristine, so I'm very pleased. 7y
batsy That looks like a handsome edition of the Dostoyevsky 💚 And yay, I Capture the Castle! Which bookseller/website did you use, if you don't? ☺️ 7y
Cinfhen Glad your celebrations were marked with books, family & love 💗💗💗 7y
saresmoore @batsy I was very excited to find such a pretty edition of the Dostoevsky. I used AbeBooks for I Capture the Castle. It arrived in the shrink wrap from Ceredigion Book Shop! 7y

Dostoyevsky himself spent 4 years in exile in such a camp following his conviction for involvement in the Petrashevsky Circle. This experience allowed him to describe with great authenticity the conditions of prison life and the convicts. In this account of his own experiences of penal servitude in Serbia, Dostoevsky describes the physical and mental suffering, the squalor and the degradation, in relentless detail.
