The Dinner Party: Restoring Women to History | Judy Chicago
6 posts
The official publication celebrating Judy Chicagos feminist art masterpiece, The Dinner Party installation at the Brooklyn Museum, and an introduction to outstanding women in history. Judy Chicagos The Dinner Party is a defining work of feminist and contemporary art that brought womens history to light on the national stage when it was completed in 1979. Published to coincide with Chicagos 75th birthday and a nationwide series of events and exhibitions, the book features newly commissioned photography and two new essays by Chicago, along with essays by art historian Frances Borzello and historian Jane Gerhard, and a foreword from museum director Arnold Lehman. The Dinner Party, a monumental triangular table, and the Heritage Floor on which the table rests, represents 1,038 women in history39 by unique large ceramic plates and runners with another 999 names inscribed on the floors ceramic tiles. It has been seen by more than a million visitors during its international exhibition tour, and has been a principal destination at the Brooklyn Museum since its permanent housing in 2007. A perfect companion to a revolutionary artwork, the book is a must-have for both long-standing fans of Judy Chicagos oeuvre and young artists and women looking for reflections of themselves in the history of Western Civilization.

@TheKidUpstairs tagged me for #5fordinner and I thought I'd select an all-Canadian dinner party in honour of our #WhatTheCanuck postal book club. Here are my picks in no particular order...

🔹Miriam Toews
🔸Margaret Atwood
🔹Alan Bradley
🔸Robertson Davies
🔹Malcolm Gladwell

Oooh what a dinner party this would be! I don't think I'd say a word. I'd just sit back and take it all in. 😉

TheKidUpstairs Great choices! I'd probably be too intellectually intimidated to talk, but I'd love to be an observer! 7y

#5forDinner We're at a table set by Judy Chicago. All of us know ASL, the conversation is free-flowing. I know all of these authors personally, some I haven't seen in 40+ years, couple I see frequently. Top is Curt Robbins. On left are Gina Oliva and Linda Risser Lytle. Bottom right Bob Rittenhouse. I MUST include his wife Pat and Curt's wife Su at our dinner party. In the middle, Julie Danielson, a great blogger. Books/blog in comments.
