Tourist Season
Tourist Season | Carl Hiaasen
13 posts | 27 read | 9 to read
The only trace of the first victim was his Shriner's fez washed up on the Miami beach. The second victim, the head of the city's chamber of commerce, was found dead with a toy rubber alligator lodged in his throat. And that was just the beginning... Now Brian Keyes, reporter turned private eye, must move from muckraking to rooting out murder, in a caper that will mix football players, politicians, and police with a group of fanatics and a very hungry crocodile

Seems an appropriate book for where I‘m sitting. The minuses of over-developed tourism. Loved reading Hiaasen on my trip to Florida last year! So funny although some of his writing hasn‘t aged well. But happy to have escaped the cold weather to Mexico! Also, any good recommendations for Mexican history books?

Howard_L I really enjoyed Distant Neighbors by Alan Riding but it may be a bit dated now. More an overview than history. 12mo
Ruthiella Welcome back. It‘s been a while since you posted! 😃 12mo
BarbaraBB Looking good where you are. I enjoyed Hiaasen‘s 12mo
SamAnne @ruthiella thanks! It‘s been a year of periods of withdrawing for various reasons. Glad to be back too! 12mo

A fun Florida crime story. A group of climate justice vigilantes are menacing Miami-area tourists, and private eye Brian Keyes is on the case.

Took a break from cooking and cleaning to sit down and read for a bit. Finished one book that I had already started. Not a fan of this one. It was just too much ridiculousness for me. It was all over the place and hard to follow. I was really happy to see it end. But, on to the next book for #24b4monday.

Andrew65 Shame the book wasn‘t better. Hopefully the next one will be. 5y
Victoriahoperose @Andrew65 I hope so too 😊😊😊 5y
jb72 Good job! I think I‘ve read one of his books. Is that the Florida series? 5y

Thank you for another wonderful #ManicMonday, @JoScho 😁🏝

📖 - “Tourist Season” by Carl Hiaasen 🏝
🎥 - “A Perfect Getaway” (featuring a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth) 🏝
🎶 - “Just Like Paradise” by David Lee Roth (my 80‘s influence is showing again 😂) 🏝

girlwiththeglasses Whut?? Chris Hemsworth was in Perfect Getaway?! Why didn‘t I noticed it sooner?😂😂 6y
DaveGreen7777 @girlwiththeglasses He was! He was the creepy tourist who was being made out to be the killer! 😂 I didn‘t know who the actor was when I saw the movie, I just remembered noticing how muscular he was and saying, “Wow, that guy is jacked!” 💪🤣 6y
vivastory I love rewatching pre-Thor movies & discovering Hemsworth starred in them. I had that happen several months ago with Cabin in the Woods. 6y
girlwiththeglasses @DaveGreen7777 I didn‘t really know him then. I only know him on Cabin in the Woods and Thor 😂. 6y
JoScho Thanks for playing Dave 💙🏝💙 6y

Wherever we go on holiday there are always lots of Norwegian books at hotels (because Norwegians travel abroad A LOT - at our hotel in Crete last year the leftover books were all Scandinavian), but this hotel also has Polish, Hungarian and Icelandic books (plus the obligatory German and Swedish ones). I love these kinds of shelves!

KVanRead That's awesome. 7y

Bizarre and funny moments. Good book but not na extraordinary one. ''Tourist Season'' is a lively story of a conspiracy intended to save Florida for the future by terrorizing tourists and thereby collapsing its superhyped condominium economy.” Entertainment level: 🦂🦂🦂🦂#Yume #DogsOfLitsy #Sha2016

It's still so cold here in NYC - I am *ready* for it to be warm and dreaming of Florida (where we went in Feb.) We are watching Bloodline and the sweat has me thinking of these #weather books set in places where the heat is on and there's a crime around every corner.

Bookdodger Track Magee was one of the best characters ever! 8y

#didntlikeitstillfinished My youngest sister really enjoys Carl Hiaasen, so I said I'd give him a try. Three books later, and I'm sure he's not my thing. But I'm glad she likes him, and soon she'll have three more for her collection. #marchintoreading @RealLifeReading

Joanne1 Well you can't say you didn't try! 8y
Gezemice I love Christopher Moore so everyone tells me to read Hiassen. I read Bad Monkey and hated it, I read Hoot and it was so-so. I think I am done with him, too. 8y
RealLifeReading I can't remember which of his books I read now but I do remember thinking, nope not for me! 8y

I don't let myself read too many mysteries. It's an addiction issue, Littens. Put a mystery in my hands and I'm going to ignore everything else in the world. But I can't help reading some Carl Hiaasen. He's just too funny to pass up. #FunFridayPhoto
