Shout!
Shout!: The Beatles in Their Generation | Philip Norman
3 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Updated to include Paul McCartneys knighting and the deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Philip Normans biography of the Beatles is the definitive work on the world's most influential banda beautifully written account of their lives, their music, and their times. Now brought completely up to date, this epic tale charts the rise of four scruffy Liverpool lads from their wild, often comical early days to the astonishing heights of Beatlemania, from the chaos of Apple and the collapse of hippy idealism to the band's acrimonious split. It also describes their struggle to escape the smothering Beatles legacy and the tragic deaths of John Lennon and George Harrison. Witty, insightful, and moving, Shout! is essential reading not just for Beatles fans but for anyone with an interest in pop music.

arlenefinnigan Read that when I was younger, had a good chuckle at the news article quote that was something like "they may look clean cut but there is whiskey in their cola". Did anyone ever actually think John Lennon was 'clean cut'?! 6y
TrishB @arlenefinnigan only if they‘d never looked at/heard him! 6y

#HeyJune #day1 #HeyJude Kicking off this month of Beatlemania with what I think is the best book written about the Fab Four. You could fill a whole bookcase at least with books written about the Beatles, as a band & individually, but most are sugar coated fan based. This book told them as they were, flawed men who weren‘t gods after all, but still with the magic that made millions around the world enthralled. Their songs were the 60s distilled.🎶

Cinfhen Look at those #Liverpool lads😍😍😍😍 7y
GypsyKat Nice choice! 7y

The song 'Fame ' features on the 'Young Americans' album released by Bowie in 1975. This was a complete turnaround in sound and look with David moving to a Philadelphia soul influenced sound and a smarter, less glam image - The Thin White Duke era. The album contains the song involving John Lennon - 'Fame' which he co-wrote with Bowie and Carlos Alomar. 👇

TrishB Also a cover of The Beatles 'Across The Universe ' which was written by Lennon later appeared on the 'Let It Be ' album.

TrishB The song 'Fame' and album 'Young Americans' are notable for featuring Luther Vandross and Robin Clark on backing vocals. Indeed , Bowie was instrumental in Vandross getting signed to a solo career thanks to his outstanding vocals on the Young Americans album.

TrishB The book featured is quite simply the definitive story of the Beatles, their career and their lives after. Quite simply a must read book on the Fab Four. 7y

Leniverse Yay! He's been missed. Not that you haven't been filling in well, but all this music trivia is great! 😂 7y
Marchpane All the musical connections are mind-blowing 😳 Bowie, John Lennon & Luther Vandross all involved in one song? Phenomenal. 7y
batsy Was not aware that this is how Luther Vandross got his start! So cool. #LitsyMusicMomentwithMrB 7y
Minervasbutler Shout is great but I think Mark Lewisohn's multi-volume work will prove to be the definitive Fabs bio 7y

LeahBergen Awesome! Have you told the husband that he has a fan-following now? Or will it just go to his head? 😆 7y
TrishB @LeahBergen I told him that people liked his trivia and keep writing. He said I hope they don't think I'm a Bowie nerd - I said what do you mean think!! 😂 7y
