The Eye of the Sheep
The Eye of the Sheep | Sofie Laguna

Winner of the Miles Franklin Literary Award 2015 Ned was beside me, his messages running easily through him, with space between each one, coming through him like water. He was the go-between, going between the animal kingdom and this one. I watched the waves as they rolled and crashed towards us, one after another, never stopping, always changing. I knew what was making them come, I had been there and I would always know. Meet Jimmy Flick. He's not like other kids - he's both too fast and too slow. He sees too much, and too little. Jimmy's mother Paula is the only one who can manage him. She teaches him how to count sheep so that he can fall asleep. She holds him tight enough to stop his cells spinning. It is only Paula who can keep Jimmy out of his father's way. But when Jimmy's world falls apart, he has to navigate the unfathomable world on his own, and make things right. Sofie Laguna's first novel One Foot Wrong received rave reviews, sold all over the world and was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award and shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Literary Award. In The Eye of the Sheep, her great originality and talent will again amaze and move readers. In the tradition of Room and The Lovely Bones, here is a surprising and brilliant novel from one of our finest writers.

#ReadingResolutions #UnpopularOpinion

I didn't like this book and I didn't think it was well written. Clearly an unpopular opinion since it won the Miles Franklin Prize. Oh well...

Sue I love an unpopular opinion. She‘s the author of this one too right? 7y
CarolynM @sue Yes she is and I won't be reading it. 7y
Ruthiella Yes, I often feel odd when I don‘t love a lauded author! Silly but there you go! I‘ve not read this author but there are others I could name 😬 7y
Sue @CarolynM Fair call (it looked like the least interesting out of the Stella Longlist to me) 7y
CarolynM @Ruthiella If I really don't like a book by a new-to-me author it's very rare for me to read another one. There's just too many others to try. 7y

This book took the reader through highs and lows. It deals with abuse, alcoholism, and special needs themes. I was rooting for Gav and Jimmy, and was heartbroken several times as the story went on. It was simultaneously beautiful and devastating, and it‘s a book that I know will stay with me for a very long time. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This book is good from the start, and I'm currently some ways into part three. Now, I keep having to take breaks because this novel just entered into another realm of emotional, sentimental, heartbreaking amazingness that I can only handle in small doses, or else my heart will explode into a million little pieces. That's the truth. 😰🧠🤯📖💓💔

What an incredible book. Beautiful language but emotionally difficult to read because of the young, 'retarded' narrator. The book touches on domestic abuse, unemployment, alcoholism but central is the internal struggle of Jimmy Flick to connect to and be accepted by those around him. A powerful read.

Wow, this book was tough going. There was a constant, creeping feeling of underlying dread the whole way through. The writing was brilliant, but I found it an emotionally tough read. Which is unusual for me.
