Dunkirk: The History Behind the Major Motion Picture | Joshua Levine
9 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
THE EPIC TRUE STORY OF DUNKIRKNOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE, WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY CHRISTOPHER NOLAN, AND STARRING KENNETH BRANAGH, TOM HARDY, AND MARK RYLANCE The Battle of Dunkirk, in May/June 1940, is remembered as a stunning defeat, yet a major victory as well. The Nazis had beaten back the Allies and pushed them across France to the northern port of Dunkirk. In the ultimate race against time, more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were daringly evacuated across the Channel. This moment of German aggression was used by Winston Churchill as a call to Franklin Roosevelt to enter the war. Now, historian Joshua Levine explores the real lives of those soldiers, bombed and strafed on the beaches for days on end, without food or ammunition; the civilians whose boats were overloaded; the airmen who risked their lives to buy their companions on the ground precious time; and those who did not escape.

This book was so powerful and so full of information. This #nonfiction read I think will be my favorite for the month. Such a stressful part of WWII #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

This book was overall good. Think it would've been nice to read the version that was published before the movies because the copy I was reading had mostly a chapter referring to the movie.
I haven't seen the movie so the only reason why I didn't stop is cause the artist in me was curious on their 4D Design secrets they were willing to share. Which wasn't much. Besides that bump it was a good book. :)

This was an interesting mix of history and back story on the making of the Chris Nolan movie. I wish it would have been one or the other, at times it was hard to jump back and forth. This may have been more of a challenge with the audio book and may be less do with the paper text.

Went to see Dunkirk with @dsfisher this afternoon. No way to make a full 24 hours for #24in48 #readathon now, but despite yesterday's migraine, I think I'm still going to have a record amount of reading time, so all in all, a good weekend. 😊

swishandflick How was the movie?! 7y
DGRachel @swishandflick I was disappointed. It seemed very disjointed as it jumped around the timeline a lot and you never got a good feel for the true scope of Dunkirk-not for the number of soldiers needing rescue, the number of civilians who assisted, or how imminent the danger. The soundtrack was great and created tension, but overall I think the film was lacking. 7y
drokka @DGRachel Have you read the linked book? It explains the reasons why Nolan deliberately chose to make it disjointed and scope. The basic premise is to have the viewer be as confused and unsure of what was going on just as the evacuees were. 7y
DGRachel @drokka I've ordered the book, but haven't read it yet. It may have been deliberate on Nolan's part, but I think it did a disservice to the memory of those who were there. For me, personally, and I understand I may be in the minority opinion, it was a poor choice and the movie was disappointing. 7y
drokka @DGRachel Fair argument. 🙂 7y

sprainedbrain I haven't read it, but I have the same problem! When I see something good like Dunkirk I need to read about it. 7y
KimHM Exactly, @sprainedbrain! It is "need." ? 7y

Started reading this when I need to take a break from packing, as the film comes out in my area Friday. I know the story, but this is a bit more specific to the choices made in and for the film. #Dunkirk
