Hanna Who Fell from the Sky
Hanna Who Fell from the Sky | Christopher Meades

From highly acclaimed, award-winning author Christopher Meades comes a magical, provocative tale of forbidden love and one girl's struggle for liberation Hanna has never been outside her secluded community of Clearhaven. She has never questioned why her father has four wives or why she has fourteen brothers and sisters. And in only one week, on her eighteenth birthday, Hanna will follow tradition and become the fifth wife of a man more than twice her age. But just days before the wedding, Hanna meets Daniel, an enigmatic stranger who challenges her to question her fate and to follow her own will. Then her mother tells her a secret--one that could grant Hanna the freedom she's known only in her dreams. As her world unravels around her, Hanna must decide whether she was really meant for something greater than the claustrophobic world of Clearhaven. But can she abandon her beloved younger sister and the only home she's ever known? Or is there another option--one too fantastical to believe? With lush, evocative prose, Christopher Meades takes readers on an emotional journey into a fascinating, unknown world--and, along the way, brilliantly illuminates complexities of faith, identity and how our origins shape who we are.

a story about bravery, hope and intrigue? This is about the daughter of a man with multiple wives who lives a simple life. As her 18th birthday approaches, she is expected to follow in the footsteps of those around her and become the fourth wife of a man twice her age. It‘s a life of strict, quiet, unfair servitude. But Hanna has a spark in her, one that lights a revelation: there may be another path, if she‘s brave enough to take it.

I have such mixed feelings about this book. The premise was great and the writing was good. But the ending just fell so flat that it ruined the whole book.

KristinaSimon I hate it when that happens! 6y

Because sometimes you have to flee your house (and MIL) and read in a sun drenched nook at the library before work.

SandyW Sorry to hear that. While I get along with my MIL, I think that might not be the case if she lived with us. 6y

Oh I can already tell this book is going to enrage me! Men get to stand but women have to kneel 🤬🤬

DrJAdMerricksson Will you keep reading? 6y
MiyakoBunny This reminds me of a very eye opening experience I once had doing outreach where the cultural practice taught that women could never be higher than men so they would be crouching or kneeling most times in each others presence. 6y
ReadingSusan @DrJAdMerricksson yes I would only stop reading if the author was enduring the behavior. 6y
ReadingSusan @MiyakoBunny wow. That must be so difficult to bite your tongue. It‘s such a struggle between respecting different cultures and beliefs and not wanting other women to be treated like that. Very tough. 6y

Finished this one and it's a tough one to review. While I really liked the plot and the characters (especially Hanna), I would've enjoyed the story more without the addition of its magical realism elements.

Hanna is nine days from turning 18. When she does she will be married to a man nearly three times her age, becoming his 5th wife. It has been ordained. A unexpected read for me, I was sucked into the isolated community, polygamy, the inexorable countdown of days, and Hanna. I was rooting for Hanna as she finally started making her own choices. 👍😊 #catsoflitsy. (Dexter, disoriented, was rudely awakened for the photo.)

Bette @CatLass007 He's a good guy. Thanks! 😊 7y
RadicalReader @Bette you have the most gorgeous cat I have ever seen! What is the cat‘s name and what breed is it? 6y
Bette @RadicalReader Thank you! When I worked at the Humane Society I never could leave without saying goodbye to him. He'd tip up his nose and touch mine and I'd whisper: I'm busting you out of this joint...and one day my husband met him and we adopted him. 😀 We named him Dexter and I don't know what kind of cat breed he is, but he has a really lovely, low key personality. 🤷‍♀️ He still likes to touch noses. 6y

Interesting premise but not particularly well executed. Hanna is about to be pushed into a polygamous marriage at age 18 but seems to "be surprised" that she will be expected to have babies, when all the women in her secluded community are doing so. I can suspend disbelief that she doesn't know the outside world but I had a hard time thinking she wouldn't know her own religion inside and out. The magical element felt like an afterthought.

ReadingSusan Yes! Perfectly said. 6y

I do love a novel about cults & polygamist sects so I enjoyed this coming of age story. Hanna is about to turn 18 & become the 5th wife of her father's friend when she starts to question her life. The magical realism may have leaned a bit too woo-woo at the end but I loved Hanna & was absorbed in her story. Paired with (vegan) Strawberry Swirl Ice Cream for my blog book tour review. Link to review, recipe & book giveaway (for U.S. addresses)👇🏻

Chelsibeau I was trying to decide if I would read this one or not 7y
DebinHawaii @Chelsibeau I would base it on your liking or appreciation for magical realism--it makes the story unique but got heavy-handed with it for me at the end. 👍 7y

Today's lunch & #soupersundays blog post: Potato & Collard Greens Soup with Maple-Cornmeal Dumplings should be paired with To Kill a Mockingbird since it's inspired by the film for my monthly movie blogging event, but I was reading this book (for review next week) while I ate it. It's a humid 87 degrees F. here but I have the air con on & I'm channeling fall weather through this tasty vegan soup. The dumplings were less successful. Recipe link👇🏻

Oppressive, polygamous cult where a girl finds in herself she's worth more than this life. With some magical realism mixed in. I love.

Day 13 #AndItsAugust #coversinyrfavecolor 💙My favorite color is blue from the palest blue to aqua--light & dark, to gray-blue, to indigo & navy. I was napping when the lighting was better, but here is a stack of blue-hued paperbacks that were handy to grab from my #TBR stacks & my blue chicken 🐔(he has 3 orange friends). 😆 Some of these covers are more blue in person, but blue they are. 🦋💎📘💙

Hanna is a young woman, like any other in the world, except for one thing: she is part of a polygamist community & has just been told, at eighteen, she must marry a man who is her father‘s age & has four other wives. Hanna must make the confusing & heartbreaking decision about where her future lies. Should she stay at home & be obedient to the only family she has ever known, or will she choose her own love & life? A gripping story for book clubs!

MrBook Always up for book club recs. I run a few. 😁👍🏻 7y
