She's Still There
She's Still There: Rescuing the Girl in You | Chrystal Evans Hurst
25 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
Whats a woman to do if her life is not taking shape the way that she thought that it would? What happens when she looks at herself in the mirror, lingering just a little longer than usual and realizes that she no longer recognizes the person staring back at her? What does she do when she sees that, somehow, her life has drifted away from all her original hopes, dreams, or plans? Speaker, blogger and writer Chrystal Evans Hurst wrote this book because she was that woman. One day she realized that she had somehow wandered away from the life that she had purposed to live a long time ago. Chrystal since discovered that this moment of awareness happens to lots of women at different seasons of their lives. Poor decisions, a lack of intentionality or planning, or a long-term denial of deep hopes and dreams can leave a woman, old or young, reeling from the realization that she is lost, disappointed, or simply numb. And she just needs encouragement. This woman simply needs someone to hold her hand, to cheer her on, and to believe with her that she is capable of still being the person she intended to be or discovering the girl she never knew was there in the first place. Chrystal uses her poignant story of an early and unexpected pregnancy, as well as other raw and vulnerable moments in her life, to let readers know she understands what its like to try and find your way after some missteps or decisions you didnt plan on. In Shes Still There Chrystal emphasizes the importance of the personal process and the beauty of that path as it is shared authentically from one girlfriend to another. Its a book of me toos, reminders of the hoped for, and challenges for the path ahead - to find direction, purpose, and true satisfaction.

Read this for a small group at church. It made me realize that I am worth it to myself. It sort of changed my life. It made me realize a lot about myself. #LitsyLove

Ironically, I let life get the best of me and stopped reading this book for a while. But I'm back on the wagon. This quote is just what I needed!

Deciding to go back to school for my Bachelor's degree at the age of 35 is my small decision. I've been stuck in the same rut for years. Now that I'm accepted for the summer... That small decision is part of a bigger decision that will pay off.

Chapter 15 talked about finding "an" answer - not "the" answer. Basically that means that where ever you are in life, you have to accept that even if you don't have the answer of where you want to be or go... You have to find an answer (any answer) and act on it. Little accomplishments become big accomplishments. You just have to trust the process. I felt that.

"Just because it hurt you doesn't mean it had to define you"

If I had a dime for every time I let someone words or thoughts about me keep me back, I'd be rich. It's harder to get over the pain than it is to take the pain. When I'm in pain, I sleep all day or scroll FB, not looking to better my situation. I still have a long way to go, but I learned over time to stop letting other people's words hold me back. No one can hold me back but me.

But while distractions might seem to give you life, the reality is that they can steal your life.

Chapter 4 spoke to me. Crystal spoke about her own particular drift in life but it is so much similar to mine. A romantic relationship can cause you to go so far away from who you was meant to be. As I think about how I was as a teenager prior to meeting my 1st boyfriend, I realized how creative I was and how much of a dreamer I use to be. I'm now trying to get back to that girl. I'm determined to not let my past control my future.

Finished this one for #BOOKED2019 as my "related to a pod cast" pick. I'm glad I choose it in audio format. It was great to hear Chrystal read it herself. The book was very inspiring and functionally applicable. It's a book that will serve as a good resource as it's reader negotiates all her seasons of life.

Cinfhen I tend to enjoy NF on audio much more than fiction and bonus points when the author narrates 😃 6y

This was an okay read for me! I had no idea that it would be so religious, I guess I should have done some deeper research. It has some common sense advice and it was relatable, I just don't think that I'm necessarily the target audience. 😂

I found She‘s Still There inspirational and applicable in equal measures, I just loved it. Once I begun, I couldn‘t put it down and found myself reading it late into the night muttering “Amen, sister” several times as I related to the author‘s journey, jotting notes of things to try and highlighting sections of wisdom. It is such a needed message!
