No MANs Land In 2002, the world changes forever. Every man, every boy, every mammal with a Y chromosome everywhere on Earth suddenly collapses and dies. With the loss of nearly half the planets population, the gears of society grind to a halt, and a world of women are left to pick up the pieces and try to keep civilization from collapsing entirely. The gendercide, however, is not absolutely complete. For some unknown reason, one young man named Yorick Brown and his pet male monkey, Ampersand, are spared. Overnight, this anonymous twentysomething becomes the most important person on the planet the key, it is hoped, to unlocking the secret of the mysterious sex-specific plague. For Yorick himself, the most important person on the planet is 10,000 miles away and he will stop at nothing to find her. But as he travels across this strange new world, both danger and opportunity alike threaten to derail his journey and with it the future of the human race. Writer Brian K. Vaughn and artist Pia Guerras acclaimed VERTIGO series Y: THE LAST MAN brings to vivid life the age-old speculation: What would really happen to the last man on Earth? Collects Y: THE LAST MAN 11-23.

Glad I'm taking some time between volumes. This series' subject matter lends itself towards the dark, disturbing and violent, but it leaves room for humour and human connection. Quality apocalyptic road trip vibes, multiple mysteries.

Wow, what a volume! We get to learn more about Yorick-I didn't like Yorick in volume 1 because he acted like a brat. Yorick changes in here. When he's forced into "therapy", he reveals his traumas, emotions towards the first few days of the virus and his love for Beth. My one question is: how did 355 send her journals to her friend? Journaling would be the last thing on my mind during a complex mission #graphicnovels

The second book was just as good as the first. I love the craziness of this story. I never know what‘s going to happen next, especially when Yorick is being Yorick. 😅 I chose my favorite image for the review post again, this one of Ampersand, the capuchin monkey dressed as Hamlet. ❤️😍❤️
Finishing this book gives me my first ever bingo for #BookSpinBingo!!!!! 🤘😆🤘

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Congrats on the bingo!🎉🎉 4y

I can‘t imagine going through an apocalyptic event with only two books... I love Yorick‘s reaction to the library. ❤️📚🤓📖❤️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Well at least he didn't bring just one book because he packed the washi tape!🤣🤣 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 I swear, I‘ll never be able to look at washi tape the same ever again! 😂🤣😂🤣 4y

This part was a bit chilling because I know there are people out there who truly believe having a “them” to claim as an enemy helps bring people together. Sure, it might work, but for all the wrong reasons. Fear should never be the catalyst for peace.

Just how valuable is the last man—and his male pet monkey—on Earth? Pretty darn valuable & pretty much everyone wants him for something...it‘s what that something is that causes so much trouble. No spoilers so I won‘t say too much more except that this volume is as good as the first and Brian K. Vaughan is quickly moving up my list of favorite authors. Fairly certain I will read anything he writes—his work is always better than good. On to Book 3.

Scene: Chicago Comics

Me: “You can‘t read Book One & stop. It‘s impossible!”
Both staff members: Nod knowingly in agreement.
Me: Grab Books 2-5 & return to counter.
1st staff member: “Just so you know, I had to put Book 5 down at one point. I had to stop reading.”
2nd staff member: Nodding, “Read Book 5 with a big box of Kleenex handy.”

Readers, I‘m not sure what I‘ve gotten myself into but it sounds like it‘s going to be a wild ride!!!

TracyReadsBooks @ElishaLovesBooks I‘ll definitely be passing this along to you—really, really good and I‘m finding it hard to it down. Good problems! 7y

I wish I had a better memory of deluxe volume 1. Vaughn is so infuriating. He developed borderline stereotypical women and the most annoying man boy but there are gems throughout the volume. And the storytelling is fun. On to the next deluxe volume.

Mehso-so

Bailey was not amused at being my book stand. Still so-so for me. Maybe this idea just isn't my jam.

I remain a big fan of this series. I think what it is trying to do is difficult and it's aware it's treading a thin line regarding feminism but I still believe it falls on the right side of that line. It has a host of interesting characters and remains fun and exciting to read. I will definitely be continuing with this series.

I realised I've not read any comics in ages and as I'm on the verge of a slump (scary I know!) I think this switch up might be just what's needed!

GiveMeYourTeeth Devoured these a few months ago. Very fun! 8y

Clearly Yorick's Grandad is not one of the nursing home playas I've been hearing about.
