This book was so good on many levels. It completely held my interest. The ending really surprised me because I didn‘t expect it. But the last few sentences wrapped it up perfectly and just as it should be. It was our book club pick for this month. I look forward to an interesting discussion. I give this book a high recommendation.
#Two4Tuesday 1. I miss family dinners with the entire family. 2. Quarantine has not affected my reading. @TheSpineView
I am still dreaming about these characters and experiencing all the emotions that they felt throughout this book. My heart breaks for these lovers who go through all measures just to be together. This book is incredibly well written and captivating. I will definitely be looking up more books by Julie Kibler and adding them to my TBR list!
Two love stories told. One in the 1940s and one present day. You‘ll find yourself invested in the characters.
This book was something I could not get into right now. Maybe another time.
Next book. I think I heard it on Anne Bogel's new podcast, but now I can't remember.
❤️
Beautifully said from the cover:
“If Julie Kibler‘s novel Calling Me Home were a young woman, her grandmother would be To Kill a Mockingbird, her sister would be The Help, and her cousin would be The Notebook. But even with such iconic relatives, Calling Me Home stands on her own.” -Wiley Cash, author of A Land More Kind Than Home
I‘m not sure what I expected with this. Maybe a romantic comedy? I think maybe this was me judging the book by its cover, but it wasn‘t quite what I thought. However, it was excellent. This author really did a fantastic job of covering two characters: different races and ages and creating a shared ground for them to bond over in this book. The writing is awesome and the story even better. I highly recommend this!
I liked reading it- especially the chapters that were Isabelle‘s. I only had a few probs: it seemed she would have been a better mother to her son, and altho at the end she said she “was a good mother”- she seemed pretty disconnected. Also, I didn‘t love the final chapter.
I can only read one book at a time- unless one is non-fiction and the other is fiction. As soon as I finish the great one I‘m nearly done with, I‘ll start these two I just picked up at the library today. Some girl posted her crying face and this title “Calling me home”- I‘m a sucker for a good cry... hope this does the trick!
This is a moving story of a mixed race relationship as told by an old white woman journeying with a younger African American friend to a funeral. The contemporary issues of the friend and single mother unspool during the trip as she hears the older woman's tale of forbidden love. A first novel by the author, the writing isn't quite up to the potential of the characters who retain somewhat limited responses to the tragic events. Good, not great.
Lovely story about the many forms of love, setting an example and the strength to go against the norm. I shed quite a few tears
Moving on to the next book and embracing summer holidays
"Only reason I'd ever wish you were different, Miss Isabelle," he said, intentionally emphasizing the word he never used anymore when we were alone-not even by accident-"is so we could do this in public, out in front of everyone, no worry the wrong somebody might see us. Otherwise, I think you're perfect. Every last thing about you."
But this thing surprises you, sticking longer than you ever predicted, and you begin to rely on it, and that relationship whittles down your walls, little by little, until you realize you know that one person better than almost anyone.
Wouldn't have picked this one for myself, it was a book club pick (and I'm the only person in this book club without an AARP card), and it took me awhile to get through because I knew it would make me sad. However, it was a very moving story and it reminded me of a time in this country I don't want to ever return to and I hope we can all work hard to make sure that love ❤️ wins.
Day 7 of #angiebookishnovember is an #overhyped book. I detested this book and then was shocked to see how many people loved it!
Loved this book from start to finish... Hard to put down
"Oh, Miss Isabelle," I said, shaking my head. "Sometimes you just have to ask for what you need."
This book has SO many feels ... I cried at the end, even when re-reading it. Eager for Book Club next week - I think we'll have great discussion.
I've been telling people to read this book. Such a wonderful story. It was a great audiobook.
