Have read this many times and though I'm not thrilled with some of the directions Bujold later took this couple, I still love it.

#URC I actually think I could finish this bingo board entirely this month, except I'm saving two of the prompts for #wintergames .

Love the “I‘m pretty sure I‘ve read this” feeling you sometimes get while reading…a feeling which is then confirmed when you check your reading log! Turns out this was a reread for me (first time was in 2016) & I liked it more this time, enough that I want to see where the story goes. Solid science fiction story about warring planets & two people who might be able to bridge the gap…or not. A fun, fast read.

Sometimes you wake up REALLY early on a Saturday morning (for no good reason) and know it‘s not the WORST thing in the world because it means you have a little extra reading time while everyone else is still asleep.

Saw something about this book somewhere, don‘t remember where, and it sounded interesting so I‘m giving it a go.

A very entertaining military sci-fi with many layered characters. I want to go on reading this series.

The Vorkosigan Saga is one of my all-time favourite sci-fi series - space opera full of heart and humour and genuinely likeable characters #20series20days @Andrew65

This is my first go at the Vorkosigan saga and I really enjoyed this one. It's refreshing to see a sci-fi heroine protagonist in her thirties?? I enjoyed her and Aral's relationship very much. This was written in the 60s I believe and in places it shows it, both in tone and terminology.

C/w: The threat of sexual violence comes up more than once in this book but never occurs on page.

marie3blue Originally published in 1986. Still, a little dated. It was also Bujold‘s first published novel. 4y

If you want to read a story that about beautiful teenagers, do not read this book. If you want to read about a #badass middle-aged woman (well, early early middle-aged) who falls in love with middle-aged man the during a military sci-fi adventure, read this book!

AiBBot I may be addicted to audiobooks. I just discovered I can borrow so many using my library card. I am in heaven. 6y

Currently listening to.

I met someone recently who mentioned liking this series and because I am THAT PERSON who thinks they can get to know someone by reading their favorite books, I immediately borrowed the first one from the library.

It‘s weird that it‘s read by a man though the main perspective seems to be a woman but he‘s a good narrator so far.

kgriffith I‘m five months into dating someone whose first Litsy post tagged a book I recommended to them, so... 😉 6y
SkeletonKey @kgriffith 😍 That‘s my kind of romance. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly I love this series!!!! The only problem with starting with this book is most of the series is not about Cordelia, but about her son. I love Miles and his adventures, but Cordelia has the highest place in my heart. 6y
SkeletonKey @Clare-Dragonfly - Oh that‘s too bad, I‘m loving Cordelia too!! 6y

AlaMich @LauraBeth I just read this in the Editor‘s Notes at the end of the book: “I emailed him [the cover artist] several images of movie stars Lois said her characters resembled.” Bingo!! One Matt LeBlanc coming right up!! 6y
LauraBeth 😂😂😂 6y
Clare-Dragonfly Aral Vorkosigan resembles Matt Leblanc?! I can‘t accept that! 6y
AlaMich @Clare-Dragonfly Ha! You‘ll have to take that up with Bujold! 😆 6y

I didn't enjoy this book. I enjoy sci fi and space operas, but this wasn't good. The plot was promising, but listening to it was a chore. Let's talk about the romance, ugh. After a few days of being marooned on a planet, the male protagonist proposes marriage. They're interrupted before the female protagonist can answer. If there was good build up for the romance, maybe I could have gotten behind it. Finally, the word rape was used too much.

She took the story in like some strange, spiked gift, too fragile to drop, too painful to hold.

A reread that holds up. This is the book I recommend to start the Vorkosigan saga. Lois McMaster Bujold writing super power is characterisation and this introduces us to Cordelia Naismith, Aral Vorkosigan and their complex love story. Political intrigue, difficult ethical choices and lots of adventure make this my favourite kind of sci-fi.

Oh. This is why everyone I trust recommends this series.

Narrator isn't thrilling, but is perfectly good. You can stream it free right now if you have Audible and Amazon :)
