Stitched Up: The Anti-Capitalist Book of Fashion | Tansy E. Hoskins
3 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
Stitched Up delves into the exclusive and alluring world of fashion, to expose class division, gender stereotyping and wasteful consumption. Tansy Hoskins illuminates the political and sociological dimensions of an industry which promotes and supports the dominant values of our age: image, glamour, money and sex. Hoskins also provides a fascinating historical narrative, showing that the clothes we wear are as indicative of who we are as they were during the reign of Louis XIV. She tackles key contemporary issues, such as the controversy over 'size zero' and the impact of fashion in depleting the world's natural resources. In a provocative move, Stitched Up argues that fashion controls our aspirations and self worth through a set of impossible beauty standards. At a time when high spending on clothes persists despite economic recession, Stitched Up provides a unique critical examination of fashion in relation to contemporary culture and the distorting priorities of capitalism.

Reading this morning before bb Eliot awakens 👼 Fun fact: almost every luxe brand has deep ties to Nazis and/or fascist dictators! #themoreyouknow

ShelleyBooksie That is a really interesting fact. I had no idea 4y
StaceGhost @ShelleyBooksie me either. I knew Coco Chanel was a Nazi spy but Hugo Boss started out making SS uniforms and Dior was fined for anti-Semitism in the early 2000‘s— crazy! 4y

Written by a #fashion-lover & activist disturbed by industry-wide practice of labour exploitation, resource abuse, pollution. Easy to understand & well-researched. One sickening anecdote involves a modelling agent talking about how they seek "new faces" from Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe because many of the women come from poverty & are used to being on their feet all day & having very little food ?? Eye-opening #SeptemBowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen

k.reads Sadly, not surprising. I've been trying to buy from ethical brands when I can afford it and from thrift stores when I can't (which is most of the time). I figure I'm not going to single handedly take down the fashion industry, but I might help a smaller company who's doing the right thing. 7y

LauraBrook So disgusting! Sounds like an interesting book, though. And it's got a great cover! 7y
batsy @Cinfhen @Cathythoughts @LauraBeth @TrishB @MicheleinPhilly @erzascarletbookgasm Yeah, it's infuriating! And sad about how much goes on. 7y
batsy @k.reads That's true, it seems to be a dilemma that none of us are free from. Trying to do the right thing as much as we can. 7y
batsy @LauraBrook It definitely is! 7y
