Thief's Journal
Thief's Journal | Jean Genet
6 posts | 8 read | 11 to read
The Thief's Journal is perhaps Jean Genet's most authentically autobiographical novel, personifying his quest for spiritual glory through the pursuit of evil. Writing in the intensely lyrical prose style that is his trademark, the man Jean Cocteau dubbed France's "Black Prince of Letters" here reconstructs his early adult years -- time he spent as a petty criminal and vagabond, traveling through Spain and Antwerp, occasionally border hopping across the rest of Europe, always one step ahead of the authorities. "Only a handful of twentieth-century writers, such as Kafka and Proust, have as important, as authoritative, as irrevocable a voice and style." -- Susan Sontag; "One of the strongest and most vital accounts of a life ever set down on paper. . . . Genet has dramatized the story of his own life with a power and vision which take the breath away. The Thief's Journal will undoubtedly establish Genet as one of the most daring literary figures of all time." -- The New York Post

I'm sure it has great literary value but like so many French books translated into English it made my eyes bleed.

Apparently the title #thejeangenie was an allusion to this author. Never heard of him but suppose I should check him out. Love that about Bowie! #septembowie

Thinking about #JeanGenie made me think of Jean Genet. This is sort of a fictionalised autobiography of Genet's life as a petty thief, a vagabond, and an outlaw in the truest sense of the word. His desire for men that was strangely generous and life-affirming in its variety. Lyrical prose and a sensibility that cannot be categorised. I really loved this bizarre, perplexing, dreamy book. #SeptemBowie @Marchpane @Cinfhen

Leniverse Nice association there! And it sounds like the kind of book Bowie would like, even if it isn't on his top 100 list. 7y
Cinfhen My friend's daughter is marrying a guy with the last name Genet...wonder if they are related?!? Having dinner with them this week, may need to do some investigating 🕵🏼 7y
TrishB Wow, great pick 👍 7y

Mamashep I had never heard of Genet until this prompt! Def need to pick up a book. 7y
readordierachel Perfect! This book sounds excellent. 7y
batsy @Mamashep He's one of those that I'm nervous about recommending, because it's not about plot or character but his voice, philosophy, vision. So I think each reader will have a very different and personal response to him :) 7y
saresmoore You are killing this photo challenge! 7y

In looking for ideas for this one, I decided to celebrate how incredible talented Bowie was. The image is from the live performance of the song in 2003 in Bercy France. The iconic harmonica of the song. #septemBOWIE

batsy Omg! We tagged the same book 🙌 😁 7y
writerlibrarian @batsy it's Genet most iconic book aside from his plays. 7y
