City of Night
City of Night | John Rechy
8 posts | 7 read | 2 reading | 9 to read
An innovative description of the urban underworld of male prostitution. Rechy portrays a nameless narrator as he travels through several US cities, meeting a collection of unforgettable characters, from drag queens and criminals to the bedridden Professor and Lance O'Hara, once Hollywood's biggest star. Rechy describes this world with brutal candour and understanding but without sentimentality or self-pity, in a prose that is highly personal, vivid and boldly descriptive.

I haven‘t done one of these in a long time! (And yes, I cheated using “City of NIGHT” for the letter N 🤷🏼‍♀️)

📔 The Bloody Chamber/Angela Carter
✍️ Virginia Woolf
🎞 Diva/Jean-Jacques Beineix, 1981
📺 Veronica Mars, 2009, 4 seasons
🎤 Chaka Khan
🎸 The Rolling Stones
🎶 Mama Roux/Dr. John

#manicmonday #LetterN @CBee

Soscha And I *still* did it wrong! 🤭 1y
Soscha I just put in my personal faves in the categories. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y

Leniverse It's impressive really, not a single N in there. 🤣 1y
CBee I love this 😂😂😂 Thanks for playing! Btw the rules are that there are no rules, so you‘re good 😊 1y

#fiercefeb #nightinthecity “ From the street,I looked up into the apartment buildings, into the naked windows of the tiny cubicle-rooms.More haggard faces peering blankly;skinny, maimed bodies of uncaring women in slips;men without shirts. All have the same look: the look of no longer questioning, resigned doom. The world on its knees..”
Published in 1963 ,an unrelenting tale of a street hustler, somewhat beat and ahead of its time.Thx. Grove Press.

1️⃣ If you are triggered by animal abuse (especially 😸), this is not the book for you.
2️⃣ I don't know if it was my edition, but there are lots of spelling/punctuation errors in the book, which definitely detracts from it.
3️⃣ #ReadHarder2017 LGBTQ+ Romance & #LRC2017 #18 With an LGBTQ relationship completed ✅

2 ⭐

SilversReviews I like your “cross off” photo. 6y

Day 6 of #aprilbookshowers! Published in the 60's! I gotta say, for a lit major who studied these guys, I probably should've known when things were published better 😝
