The Other Mother
The Other Mother: A Novel | Carol Goodman
24 posts | 19 read | 32 to read
From the author of the internationally bestselling The Lake of Dead Languages comes a gripping novel about madness, motherhood, love, and trust. When Daphne Marist and her infant daughter, Chloe, pull up the gravel drive to the home of Daphnes new employer, it feels like theyve entered a whole new world. Tucked in the Catskills, the stone mansion looks like something out of a fairy tale, its lush landscaping hiding the view of the mental asylum just beyond its border. Daphne secured the live-in position using an assumed name and fake credentials, telling no one that shes on the run from a controlling husband who has threatened to take her daughter away. Daphnes new life is a far cry from the one she had in Westchester where, just months before, she and her husband welcomed little Chloe. From the start, Daphne tries to be a good mother, but shes plagued by dark moods and intrusive thoughts that convince her shes capable of harming her own daughter. When Daphne is diagnosed with Post Partum Mood Disorder, her downward spiral feels unstoppableuntil she meets Laurel Hobbes. Laurel, who also has a daughter named Chloe, is everything Daphne isnt: charismatic, sophisticated, fearless. They immediately form an intense friendship, revealing secrets to one another they thought theyd never share. Soon, they start to look alike, dress alike, and talk alike, their lives mirroring one another in strange and disturbing ways. But Daphne realizes only too late that being friends with Laurel will come at a very shocking priceone that will ultimately lead her to that towering mansion in the Catskills where terrifying, long-hidden truths will finally be revealed....

TODAY‘S PROMPT: TELL ME ABOUT IT, STUD

“Tell me about it” - Should she really have done what she did? That seemed to be the only way to keep her baby.

I always felt something sinister was about to happen, and was kept on edge and feared for Daphne.

Sort of strange, definitely thought it was going to be more of a domestic thriller and not really more suspenseful.

Well that was completely mind blowing! I‘ll admit, until about 120 or so pages in I wasn‘t sure if I even wanted to continue reading, but then I couldn‘t wait to figure out what on earth was happening. You need to pay some definite attention while reading this one! I didn‘t see what was coming at all!

ps - my reading light always messes with my pics 😂 sorryyyy

tammysue Glad you enjoyed it! Stacking😀 7y

Daphne and Laurel are both new mothers who are suffering from postpartum depression. They become good friends fast but one of them commits suicide. Was it Laurel or was it Daphne? Was it really a suicide.? This book jumps between the characters and their journal writing. I didn't see any of the twist coming. This book was a little dark at times as they explored how everyone was feeling about certain issues!

k.reads.5 Ooh, will have to check this one out. Thanks for the review. I'm always looking for a good psychological thriller. 7y

When you just go into Sam's Club to get just granola bars and you walk out with books. At least they are books that I have been wanting to buy! I have no self control when it comes to books!

There are many sneaky, conniving, untrustworthy, deceitful characters in THE OTHER MOTHER.

THE OTHER MOTHER had a pretty clever and brilliant storyline.

As you near the last pages of the book you will still be asking yourself "Just who is the other mother" and "Is anyone who they say they are?" 4/5

I really liked this! I read it so fast-I just couldn‘t stop. The severity of the postpartum issues of both Daphne and Laurel make for such great unreliability in terms of narrators. I didn‘t know what I could trust and for much of the time, I didn‘t even trust the narrator to be who she said she was. Honestly, this is quite a ride! Such twists! Some bigger than others.

It‘s weird to enjoy a book about such a serious topic so much, but I did.

Just finished this book.

I almost didn‘t continue with it because it was pretty dark and addressed some sensitive issues, but it turned out to be quite a good psychological thriller.

I also enjoyed Carol Goodman‘s book THE OTHER WIDOW.

Review of THE OTHER MOTHER will be on my blog on March 29.

I have a teaser on Goodreads.

FountainBookstore Great cover design! Especially with there being so much competition in that channel right now. 👀 7y

@MinDea THANKS...fun questions.

1. This book is pretty dark. Will give it a few more pages since it is a thriller which I like.

2. I can only pick one???😍 I will go with Hershey's chocolate bar with almonds.

3. Baby Boomer

4. Land's End - my winter coat.

5. No plans except for church.

This one was a bit confusing at times, but if you like unreliable narrators & plot lines that twist back & forth, this may be right up your alley. I enjoyed it for the most part, though I thought it could‘ve maybe been tightened up some. Due out in March 2018.
