The Night Market
The Night Market | Jonathan Moore

From an author who consistently gives us "suspense that never stops" (James Patterson), a near-future thriller that makes your most paranoid fantasies seem like child's play. It's late Thursday night, and Inspector Ross Carver is at a crime scene in one of the city's last luxury homes. The dead man on the floor is covered by an unknown substance that's eating through his skin. Before Carver can identify it, six FBI agents burst in and remove him from the premises. He's pushed into a disinfectant trailer, forced to drink a liquid that sends him into seizures, and is shocked unconscious. On Sunday he wakes in his bed to find his neighbor, Mia--who he's barely ever spoken to--reading aloud to him. He can't remember the crime scene or how he got home; he has no idea two days have passed. Mia says she saw him being carried into their building by plainclothes police officers, who told her he'd been poisoned. Carver doesn't really know this woman and has no way of disproving her, but his gut says to keep her close. A mind-bending, masterfully plotted thriller--written in Moore's "lush, intoxicating style" (Justin Cronin)--that will captivate fans of Blake Crouch, China Mi?ville, and Lauren Beukes, The Night Market follows Carver as he works to find out what happened to him, soon realizing he's entangled in a web of conspiracy that spans the nation. And that Mia may know a lot more than she lets on.

Pickpick

This was solid, with a few weaknesses: it was a little preachy, and the underlying plot was a little simplistic. Some of the threads that came together at the end didn't feel meaningful or significant.
The end almost really pissed me off but came back around to solid. Moore left a couple small gems unexplained for the reader to pick up, without holding their hand and explaining it (something I've noticed lately--trust the reader!!)

sloanghost Lovely prose, only once going so far into hard boiled territory that it made me laugh. Nice to see a neo-noir with more Hammet than Chandler in it. I quite liked Ross and Jenner. Mia was a bit of a paper doll, which is true to genre but still kind of a bummer. 6y

What, no acknowledgment for his obviously close relationship with his partner Jenner?? Also boy is this shedding subtlety fast. Bit preachy there, Jon.

It's true that society is sick and consumerism is a blight on humanity but this book also brings a bit of that Old Man Yells At Cloud "smartphones will bring the apocalypse" hysteria that I don't love.

This one finally came back in! I'm determined to finish. I really like the prose, it manages to clearly evoke the hard-boiled style without reading like a one-to-one pastiche of Hammett or Chandler.

Suspenseful at times with a hint of romance. Definitely a distopian/sci-fi book which usually isn't my thing. Overall though I enjoyed it and would give it 4 out of 5 stars.

I loved how perfectly noir this novel was, while also delivering new weird contamination and near future sci-fi. This is an excellent blend of genres without any sacrifice in the character or word craft. All the noir genre feelings without the cardboard tropes. Like if "They live", "Borne" and "The Maltese Falcon" swirled up a love child.

Very disappointing, I went into this thinking it was going to be a good let‘s solve this missing memory thing and was slapped in the face with an abysmal ending. I wanted to know why the body was contagious, why the body was there at all, more about his previous “episodes” and was left with nothing but a giant red hand print on my face.

This one has a really dark, dystopian/sci-fi/Big Brother type of feel to it. Set in San Francisco, it was intriguing and I liked the way it gradually unfolded, but I thought there were parts that didn‘t quite fit together as well as they could have. I enjoyed it, but I think it could‘ve been fleshed out a little better. But still, an author I wasn‘t previously familiar with but liked well enough to want to seek out his previous novels.

Alfoster Sooo agree! I liked it too but kept thinking “What just happened?” Didn‘t see anything coming! 7y
Coleen @Alfoster That whole body erosion thing at the beginning totally intrigued me, but the story barely touched on that part. Some things just didn‘t quite seem like they belonged, or else were left kind of open-ended. 7y
Alfoster Seriously, that‘s what I thought too! Like the author had a great idea but went off on another tangent? 7y

I'm really enjoying #TheNightMarket, which I received as an ARC from #Netgalley. One twist and turn after another.

In this world, we're addicted to the latest "it" thing, to the point that we tune out of the rest of life to satisfy our desire for "it." But a pair of homicide detectives get mixed up in events that don't make sense, and they begin to unravel the con.

Fascinating. Imagine waking up with one set of vague memories, only to learn that you are mistaken. You've had the flu. That's all.

I've just started this ARC ebook from #NetGalley, and I do not want to stop. #TheNightMarket has captured my attention.

And that cover! Love it!
